This morning I found my most recent issue of the Nike Golf Insider newsletter in my email inbox, but this one was different. Instead of the usual equipment promo or congrats for another Nike Golf team member’s tour victory, it was an announcement for a live webcast this afternoon — featuring none other than Tiger Woods himself. Wow, Tiger talking live to regular folks like me. I had to check this out.
After emailing my friend JZ (who is the biggest Tiger Woods groupie I know — more on this later) to let him know about the event, I logged into nikegolf.com. While I waited I watched a pretty cool montage-style commercial showing Tiger and his Nike Golf teammates make their golf balls do things my Nike clubs (in other words, me) cannot. Then after a few replays, voila — there was the man himself on screen, with a bunch of smaller screens from various locations across the US including New York, Minnesota, San Francisco and Sacramento to name a few (there were 8-10 in all I think).
Nike Golf set up a series of events, demo days and the like at these locations, and people were able to ask Tiger questions directly — Tiger fielded 2 questions from each location. Tiger actually moderated the overall session – there were NG team members to moderate at each location but no go-between on Tiger’s end, so folks could interact directly with Tiger. Pretty cool.
Questions covered a wide range of topics including Tiger’s fondest golfing memories, his playing strategy, golf course design philosophy, and of course equipment. What was nice was when he talked about equipment, it wasn’t about specific Nike Golf equipment (as easily as it could have been) – equipment questions were interspersed among other topics and included things like fitting and playing equipment suited for a player’s individual abilities (guilty for not doing so on both counts here).
The session lasted just under an hour, and all in all it was a nice exchange between the most famous athlete on the planet and his fans, average folks off the street. I hope Nike Golf does more webcasts like these in the future, perhaps with other Nike Golf athletes, instructors or maybe with some folks in product development (Tom Stites anyone?).
You can read a nice summary of the webcast here at orlandogolfblogger.com.
I’ll post a link to the webcast itself when Nike makes the link available.
Did you see the web cast live? What did you think? Who would be a good subject for Nike’s next live web cast? Let us know with a comment below.
