NGN Staff Picks: Our Nike Golf 2011 Athlete Wish List

With 2010 coming to an end and the New Year just around the corner, the NGN staff has been thinking about Nike Golf’s roster of athletes for the 2011 season. The contracts of a few of the game’s more notable players are up at the end of this year, and this got our brains going about who we would like to see with a swoosh on their gear for 2011 (whether or not their contract is up at the end of the year). We’ve each chosen five players — three from the PGA and European Tours, one from the LPGA and one wild card pick (Nationwide, Champions, Challenge, Ladies European Tour, etc.). Here are our picks for the five players we’d most like to see on Nike’s staff:

DAMIAN DANIELS

Matteo Manassero
I thought Matteo would be a good fit for Nike before he picked up his first win on the European Tour in October. However, the kid is still a phenom. Of course, the tri-fecta would be if Nike could have Francesco and Edoardo Molinari then added Matteo. However, Matteo certainly has a lot of wins in front of him and could be a great staple on the European Tour for years to come. Matteo has also only played in 2 majors and finished T13 and T36 as the Low Amateur in each. The kid’s got major game.

Ross Fisher
I think Ross fills a great void for Nike’s current staff of athletes. Ross is a grinder on the European Tour and plays well in all the big events. He’s the quiet killer who just gets it done week in and week out. He’s consistent, like Stewart Cink, but younger. He clearly has some majors in front of him and would be a great addition to the Nike roster. I’ve always liked Ross Fisher. I liked him more after his showdown with AK in the Volvo World Match Play Finals and even more when he needed to fufill his fatherly duties. Ross is a professional, through and through.

Marc Leishman
Ever notice how there isn’t an Australian on Nike’s roster? This former rookie of the year winner has flown under the radar since he’s been on the PGA Tour and is poised to pick up his first win on the PGA. He got his first taste of the majors in 2010 and finished T60 and T48 in The Open and PGA Championships. Leishman has the game. Nike tends to like young guys who have done well with accomplishments and Leishman was a big winner from 06-08 with 7 wins on three different tours.  I thought about Michael Sim here, but I think Leishman will get his first win in 2011.

Brittany Lincicome
Nike’s current females on staff include 2 of the Top 10 in the world and a rookie in the LPGA. On the European Tour, we have Carly Booth, the future women’s #1 player in the world, and Frances Bondad, who’s good for constant Top 30′s. Brittany has major distance and game. I think the only thing she is missing is some exposure. Brittany, 25, already has 3 wins on the LPGA Tour. Two of those are huge wins in the Women’s World Match Play in 2006 and a major in the 2009 Kraft Nabisco Championship. She’s 25 and has already played in 23 majors (1 win, 6 Top 10′s, 11 Top 25′s). She’s only 21st on the Rolex Rankings, but I think she’ll be in the Top 10 before long.

James Byrne
The young scot is a straight up stud. James, 21 from Scotland, is currently at 18th on the World Amateur Golf Ranking and attends Arizona State University. James’ biggest achievements thus far have been finishing 2nd in the 2010 World Amateur Championship and representing Scotland in the World Amateur Team Championships. While James doesn’t have a college win, he would represent more than that to Nike Golf. While their signing of Carly Booth, also Scottish, was very significant, James would help stretch the men’s game to that same area. James has represented Scotland in every amateur competition thus far and is their highest ranked amateur. Look for big things from James.

ALAN NUMSUWAN

Ryan Palmer
It’s no secret that Ryan Palmer had a career year in 2010. He finished 17th on the PGA TOUR money list in 2010 with a win at the Sony Open, a 2nd place finish at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, and top 10 finishes at The Barclays, Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, and the Valero Texas Open. Having watched Palmer play at Ridgewood Country Club at The Barclays I was impressed his consistent play and cool on-course demeanor. I was more impressed when I ran into him and his family at a nearby restaurant after The Barclays and saw first-hand how kind the Palmer clan is. Palmer also runs The Ryan Palmer Foundation which is committed to community involvement, health, and education.

Martin Kaymer
If Martin Kaymer was a Nike Golf club he would be the new SQ MachSpeed Black. Sleek and ninja-like, Kaymer won four times on the PGA and European Tours, although you never heard a lot out of this soon-to-be 26-year old. I like Kaymer in Nike because he lets his winning do the talking. Plus he brings talent that can win anywhere from Abu Dhabi, to Scotland, to the ridiculous conditions at the U.S. Open. I also think Kaymer would be great in expanding Nike’s presence in Germany.

Jason Day
What does Jason Day have in common with some other Nike Golf Athletes? The bravado, drive, and dedication to be the best in the world. Even before Day was 20 years old he was looking forward to taking down Tiger, now at 23 he’s already won on TOUR and made a serious run during the FedEx Cup, with top 5 finishes at The Barclays and the Deutsche Bank Championship. Day’s also looked good in the swoosh before, so it’s a natural fit, plus he’d be a great representative for Nike Golf’s Australian expansion.

Na Yeon Choi
To be the best in women’s golf, you have to have the best representing you, and right now that person is Na Yeon Choi. While N.Y. Choi is currently 4th in the Rolex Rankings, she is #1 on the LPGA Tour Money List. She also had the lowest scoring average for any LPGA player at 69.87, and its first in most birdies and sand saves. Choi is also a supporter of youth golf as she donated $30,000 to LPGA-USGA Girls Golf. Choi would be a great fit for Nike to start marketing the I <3 NYC shirts:

Joseph Bramlett
I think given Bramlett’s ability to get a PGA TOUR card through Q-School and the comparisons to Tiger Woods, everything has been said about him already. The young phenom’s achievements to date are incredible. And while Bramlett already has an affinity for the swoosh (He plays Nike equipment, and Stanford is sponsored by Nike Golf), I don’t think Bramlett is officially a Nike Golf Athlete. If he can continue his success on TOUR, I believe Bramlett will be another great young star to add to the Nike Golf roster.

BOB DIERCKSMEIER

Robert Karlsson
Sweden’s Robert Karlsson is currently ranked #17 in the World Golf Rankings, he finished sixth in this year’s race to Dubai, and won the whole thing back in 2008. At the end of November he won the Dubai World Championship, his 11th European Tour victory, and earlier in the year he won the Qatar Masters. His winning ways are just what Nike looks for, and at 6’5” he’d look great in the Nike European apparel collection. Also, with a 2010 driving distance average of 291 yards, he’d put Nike’s new 2011 MachSpeed Black and VR Pro drivers through their paces.

Rory McIlroy
Irishman Rory McIlroy posted nine top 10 finishes on the European Tour and a win on the PGA Tour in 2010, and he’s currently 10th in the World Golf Rankings. He’s only 21 and he hits it long (300 yard driving distance average), two characteristics that appeal to younger fans of Nike Golf. He only has two career wins, but look for that total to increase as he gains experience on both the PGA and EPGA tours. He would also look good in Nike’s European apparel collection, and living in Northern Ireland he would give Nike’s outerwear collection a workout.

Dustin Johnson
DJ finished 5th in the FedEx Cup this year, he had wins at the AT&T Pebble Beach and BMW Championship, and he’s currently 14th in the World Golf Rankings. Notable near misses at this year’s U.S Open and PGA Championship show that he can contend in major championships, and I think it’s only a matter of time before he gets his first major title. With a driving distance average of 308 yards he flat out bombs it, and he’d look great with a MachSpeed Black or VR Pro in his hands. He also would look great in Nike’s 2011 men’s apparel and footwear collections.

Beatriz Recari
Beatriz Recari enjoyed a stellar amateur career in Europe and her home country of Spain, and he brought a fresh face to the LPGA Tour in 2010, her first full year on tour. She had one win at the CVS Pharmacy LPGA Challenge in October, followed by two top 10’s in her next three starts. If she can carry that momentum into the 2011 season, look for her to contend more than once, and perhaps find the winner’s circle again in her second season. Beatriz would bring a refreshing young international personality to Nike Golf, as well as a fashionable style to the tour wearing Nike Women’s apparel and footwear.

Blair O’Neal
My wild card pick is the winner and MVP of the Golf Channel’s Big Break Dominican Republic, Blair O’Neill. We’ll see Blair playing on the LPGA Tour in March 2011 at the Kia Classic, most likely along with Nike Golf’s Michelle Wie (Kia is another one of Michelle’s sponsors). I think Blair would be a great complement to Nike’s female staff — she can play, and she would do well with Nike Golf equipment in her bag. She has a great personality, and her experience as a model would serve Nike Golf well in showing off its apparel and footwear collections. So Nike Golf take note, Blair O’Neal would be a great addition to Nike Golf’s roster of pro and celebrity athletes.

So this is who we would like to see playing for the swoosh, but we’ll have to wait and see if Nike Golf makes any of our athlete wishes come true next year. Who would you like to se as a Nike athlete in 2011?

Weekend Wrap-up :: South African Open

Ernie Els took the title in his native country, fending off fellow top countryman, Retief Goosen. Meanwhile, one of Nike’s South Africans, Charl Schwartzel, was right up there with them. Other Nike South African, Trevor Immelman, did not compete.

Sadly, Matt Haines finished with a missed cut, as did Pablo Martin, coming off of his win last week. See below for the final scores from the South African Open.

European Tour :: South African Open

4 :: Charl Schwartzel :: 65 69 66 64 :: 264 :: -18
CUT :: Pablo Martin :: 71 71 :: 142 :: -2
CUT :: Matt Haines :: 79 :: +7

Nike Golf Athletes in the Field :: 12.16-12.19

The European Tour stays in South Africa this week, where Trevor Immelman has won this event twice, but isn’t playing this week. Also, last year, Pablo Martin stayed in contention after his win. Sounds similar to me. Also, Charl Schwartzel looks to come up big again on home soil.

European Tour :: South African Open

Matt Haines
Pablo Martin
Charl Schwartzel

That’s it! Best of luck to the swooshers this weekend!

Nike Golf introduces the new Nike Zoom Advance, a Tour-level golf shoe that offers the ultimate in comfort and stability.  The new Nike Zoom Advance aligns perfectly with Nike Golf’s obsession — to design footwear that allows golfers to focus on their game and not their feet.

Pablo Martin Wins, Charl Schwartzel Takes Second at Alfred Dunhill

Nike Athletes Pablo Martin and Charl Schwartzel Start the 2011 European PGA Tour Season with a Bang

The Nike Swoosh dominated the weekend at the European PGA (EPGA) Tour’s season opener with Pablo Martin’s successful defense of his Alfred Dunhill Championship title and fellow Nike athlete Charl Schwartzel’s tied for second place finish.

Martin benefitted from his red-hot Nike Method 004 putter, evidenced by his second-place ranking in putts per round in the field.  The Nike Method putter, which first became available to consumers in February 2010, already has won a total of 15 professional tournaments around the world, including two major championships on the PGA Tour.

The revolutionary new Method putter was born out of innovation and fueled by the demands of Nike athletes. The polymetal groove technology provides a faster, positive forward roll at impact for the kind of accuracy and consistency Tour professionals demand.

The young Spaniard also had a bag-full of Nike VR products to assist him to his second EPGA Tour victory.  He used the VR Tour driver and Nike’s new VR Pro Combo irons. Martin also used the Nike ONE Tour ball and wore Nike Golf apparel, as well as the new Nike Zoom TW 2011 shoe.

Schwartzel, a five-time winner on the EPGA Tour, also performed with a full bag of Nike Golf equipment, wore Nike Golf apparel and the new Nike Lunar Control shoe.

Weekend Wrapup :: 2011 European Tour Kickoff, Ladies in Dubai and a healthy AK?

What a way to start the 2011 European Tour season! Pablo Martin picked up the win and successfully defended his 2010 win at the Alfred Dunhill Championship.

The strange part to me is that Pablo was in the final stage of Q-School but a week ago after going through the very earliest of qualifying stages. Maybe 2 wins in the span of 1 year on the European Tour is enough to get him an exemption on the PGA Tour if he so chooses.

Also in the field, Charl Schwartzel finished with a T2, same as last year. How odd. 2011 is starting exactly the same way for these two Nike Golf Athletes. However, there’s some new faces on the European Tour, as Tommy Fleetwood and Matt Haines were in the field.

Here’s the scores for the Nike Athletes at the 2011 Alfred Dunhill Championship;

1 :: Pablo Martin :: 69 70 68 70 :: 277 :: -11
T2 :: Charl Schwartzel :: 70 70 69 70 :: 279 :: -9

CUT :: Tommy Fleetwood :: 72 75 :: 147 :: +3
CUT :: Matt Haines ::  79 71 :: 150 :: +6
WD :: Oliver Fisher

Meanwhile in Dubai, Michelle Wie joined the Ladie’s European Tour for their final event of their 2010 season. After some questions about her back, Michelle came out and picked up a nice Top 10. Here are the scores for the Nike Athletes at the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters.

T6 :: Michelle Wie :: 71 72 73 67 :: 283 :: -5
T31 :: Frances Bondad :: 78 70 71 73 :: 292 :: +4
CUT :: Carly Booth :: 76 77 :: 153 :: +9

On the PGA Tour, the Shark Shootout happened, and while DJ and Poults took the win, Anthony Kim had a decent outing. He was paired with Chris Dimarco and they finished T3. I’m not sure how much this actually says about AK being 100%, as AK thrives in team play, but it’s a good sign. Fellow Nike Athlete, Justin Leonard, was paired with Scott Verplank and finished T10 (out of 10 teams).

A big congratulations to Pablo, Charl and Michelle on their big finishes this past week.

Nike Golf VR Pro Fairway Woods Available February 3, 2011

Nike Golf Adds More Performance and Distance with the Introduction of the VR Pro Fairway Woods

Nike Golf is adding more distance to its VR Pro line with the addition of the new VR Pro Fairway woods.

The VR Pro fairway woods are loaded with ground-breaking technology, specifically the combination of the Variable Compression Channel and the STR8-FIT face angle technology.  The new Variable Full Compression Channel on the VR Pro fairway woods increases speed at impact in more spots on the club face, delivering greater distance on draws, stingers, high cuts, fades or straight shots.

As with the Nike VR Pro driver, the VR Pro fairway woods feature a Tour-inspired design with a traditional pear-shaped club head.  Working directly with Nike Golf Tour athletes, the VR Tour Pro has a flatter sole and lower profile, which promotes confidence and greater control. The flatter and lower profile makes it easier to get the ball up in the air.

“The work with our tour staff lead us to a fairway wood which is hotter over a larger area of the face and has a flatter sole for ease off of tight lies,” according to Nike Golf’s Director of Production Creation Tom Stites.  “The STR8-FIT Tour adapter allows us to position the head precisely where the player wants it which maximizes visual confidence and performance.”

The workability of the VR Pro fairway wood is perfected with the STR8-FIT Tour technology providing 32 options to customize the club face angle.  The power to adjust the club to the perfect position makes for more shots in your golf bag.

Athlete Profile :: Joseph Bramlett

Much hype has been made of Joseph Bramlett since his great final round at Q-School to secure his 2011 PGA Tour Card. However, some of you may remember Mr. Bramlett when he qualified for the 2010 US Open at Pebble Beach (where he was the runner up in the 2005 California State Amateur).  There has also been a large buzz around the fact that Tiger tweeted about him twice, saying “Congrats to Joe Bramlett for making it through Q School” and “Can’t wait to play with him next season.” The two of them also played together during a practice round at Pebble Beach. We here at NG Nation just want to give you an idea of who Joseph Bramlett is and will profile his career thus far, as we’ll be seeing a lot of him in 2011.

Name :: Joseph Bramlett

wrist injury

2008-2009
4 events, 2 top 10′s, 3 top 25′s
wrist injury

Bramlett has accomplished a lot. Some may be concerned about his wrist, but 6 rounds of q-school is enough to expose your game and physically drain you. Bramlett stuck it out and put together a solid six rounds. Not only does Joseph join Tiger in playing Nike clubs and apparel, going to Stanford and being pupils of Butch Harmon, but also as the second African-American on Tour. He has full 2011 Tour card and we can’t wait to see Joseph join the tour along with Nike Athletes Jamie Lovemark, Jhonattan Vegas and Kevin Kisner from the Nationwide Tour.

Chevron, LPGA Tour Championship and Q-School Wrap-up

We had an exciting weekend of finishes in the PGA and LPGA Tours, with the Chevron Challenge, Q-School Finals and the LPGA Tour Championship.

A recap of the Nike Athletes in each event will be given below;

Q-School Final Stage

*T16 :: Joseph Bramlett :: 67 73 69 69 72 68 :: 418 :: -11
T50 :: Dustin Garza :: 73 70 70 68 72 71 :: 424 :: -5
T85 :: Scott Brown :: 73 73 71 69 71 71 :: 428 :: -1
T160 :: Chris Nallen :: 77 76 76 70 68 67:: 434 ::+5
WD :: Pablo Martin :: 78 69 74 :: 221

Joseph Bramlett  was the only one to lock up his Tour card. Big congrats to the kid from Stanford. Chris Nallen finally found his game in the last 3 rounds, but it was too late.

LPGA Tour Championship

T11 :: Suzann Pettersen :: 73 73 73 72 :: 291 :: +3
CUT :: Amanda Blumenherst :: 76 72 76 :: 224 :: +8

Petts almost squeaked out a Top 10, but still had a great finish to her year. She finishes at 3rd in the Rolex Rankings and 5th on the LPGA Money List.

Chevron World Challenge

2 :: Tiger Woods :: 65 66 68 73 :: 272 :: -16
3 :: Paul Casey :: 73 65 69 69 :: 276 :: -12
T6 :: Stewart Cink :: 69 75 68 67 :: 279 ::  -9
T16 :: Anthony Kim :: 79 66 74 73 :: 292 :: +4

HEARTBREAK CITY, as my man, Gus Johnson, would say. Tiger failed to hold onto the win, but he’s happy, so we’re happy? Right? But notice how his scores got higher each day? As far as the other swooshers are concerned, Cink and Casey continued their solid play, while AK threw down a nice 66 after his 79. But his 79 wasn’t even the worst score of the tournament! Nick Watney bubbled an 80 (+8) on the final day and still finished 13th.

Nike Apparel and Footwear at Chevron World Challenge – Final Round

What a dramatic finish to today’s final round at the Chevron World Championship. We got to see a duel between Tiger Woods, in Sunday Red, and Graeme McDowell, with the European being the first ever to come back from four strokes back to beat Woods in a final round.

With the drizzle affecting play all day, we got to see some outerwear on the athletes. AK and Stewart Cink wore rain or wind gear, and Paul Casey opted for an argyle sweater from the Tiger Woods Collection. Tiger on the other hand, had his rain gear brought out to him while on the back nine but ended up sticking with his Sunday Red polo and a black baselayer.

Thanks for checking out the apparel recap at the Chevron World Championship. Here’s what the athletes wore in the final round

Tiger Woods – Round 4

Nike Dri-FIT Body Map Polo TW Collection – Carmine

Nike Sphere Dry Baselayer – Black

Nike Zoom TW 2011 – Black

Anthony Kim – Round 4

Nike Storm-FIT Elite S/S Half Zip Jacket – Black

Nike Lunar Control – Black/Metallic Silver/Black

Paul Casey – Round 4

Nike Argyle V-Neck Sweater – Tiger Woods Collection – Black

Nike Dri-FIT Tech Solid Polo – White

Nike Lunar Control – White/Metallic Pewter

Stewart Cink – Round 4

Nike Shoulder Grid Polo – Football Blue

Nike Zoom Advance – White/Silver/White
