Breathe it in, folks. It’s Masters Week. It’s here and it’s beautiful.
I honestly haven’t been this excited for a tournament in a long time. However, I’d be more excited if I were Bob, since he’ll be in Augusta for a bit this week. If I had to sum up the Masters in a few words, they would be: Tiger, England, South Africa and everyone else.
I won’t talk much about Tiger — I’ll leave that to TMZ. But I will say, that I loved that he said he was here to win and that he hasn’t even qualified for the Ryder Cup. Let’s let the golf do the talking.
Next topic: It’s tea time. Or tee time. But look at the Englishmen in this tournament (with WG Rankings):
- Lee Westwood (4)
- Paul Casey (6)
- Ian Poulter (7)
- Luke Donald (22)
- Ross Fisher (27)
- Oliver Wilson (39)
- Simon Dyson (56)
- Chris Wood (77)
Really, I think Westy, PC and Poults have a great shot at winning. Casey’s record at Augusta is as clean as anyones, but I just hope his shoulder doesn’t bother him too much. I’m going to discount Westwood because of his history at Augusta. I believe he’ll win a major this year, just not this week. But this English drought can’t continue and there’s plenty of talent from across the pond.
South Africa looks great and not just because my family just returned from there. Els, Goosen and Tim Clark all have amazing records at Augusta and they should all be in the Top 25 at the end of the week. The sleeper here is Charl Schwartzel. He’s diced up some tough courses this year and he’s as hot as anyone.
Then you just have to look at everyone else. Mickelson, Furyk, Ogilvy and then all the other young studs like O’Hair, Watney, Villegas and others. I’m gonna give you another one to watch; Stewart Cink. He has a pretty clean record at Augusta, so he’s definitely worth a look this week. He’s been quiet this year, but I hope to see him around on Sunday.
My two big sleepers are Rory “The Kid” McIlroy and Martin “Not Kramer” Kaymer. Rory has been sub-par this season and this could be the week he breaks out and shocks people, though it should be no surprise. Kaymer just hasn’t had much luck on American soil, but don’t be surprised to see them in contention. I want to call Alvaro “The Bomb” Quiros a sleeper, but he’s been amazing this year with a 33, 14 and 6 in his past three tournaments.
Other guys that are sleepers are Sergio and all of the past winners, actually. For instance, who is going to pick Angel Cabrera to win? No one. I like Weirsy a lot, not because I’m Canadian, but he’s had a lot of good rounds this and he should have a great weekend.
I’m going to give you a list of a few guys of who I think will be in the Top 10 this week:
- Tiger “Tiger” Woods
- Anthony “AK” Kim
- Paul “My shoulder doesn’t hurt” Casey
- Ian “I haven’t played in a month” Poulter
- Retief “The Gooseman” Goosen
- Ernie “Not Bert” Els
I’m excited that Tiger is back and I would truly like to see him dominate the field and win by 5 shots. But I know that the other golfers are excited he’s back too to show the world what they’ve got. I will never forget AK’s 11 straight birdies last year…and after a win last week, and knowing he can hang with Tiger (see AT&T last year)..you all know what he’s capable of.
My top 3 guys are all Nike boys…but it’s no surprise, they’re starting to dominate the world…and really, who saw Charl Schwartzel coming out of the blue? Nike.
I feel like this will be one of the most competitive tournaments I will ever remember. I’ve gone on and on about the players..and I feel like I’ve named almost all of them, but my eyes will be locked this weekend and yours should be too.
Get your popcorn ready.
