NG Nation Fantasy Four: Verizon Heritage

Editor’s Note: This week we’re introducing a new feature on the blog, the NG Nation Fantasy Four. I’m really excited to have NG Nation contributor Damian Daniels bringing this feature to you (Damian has written feature pieces for the blog before) — he will be giving you his take on 12 PGA Tour players to watch each week: four Nike athletes, and eight players from the field, four who are hot that week and four who have a strong playing history at that week’s tour event. From the 12 he will select The Final Four — his top four picks for the week including one Nike athlete and three players from the field. I hope you enjoy the Fantasy Four series!

Bob

Welcome to the first edition of the NG Nation Fantasy Four. This week, I’ll be taking a look at the Verizon Heritage field.

I’ll outline my Nike Golf foursome, players that are hot, players that have good history at the course and then pick my final four.

I’ve been a fantasy golf enthusiast for the better part of four years now. I may not be an expert, but I, Damian Daniels, will do my best to drop some weekly fantasy knowledge for the benefit of all those that care to read. Let’s get started.

NIKE GOLF: FOUR TO WATCH

Stephen Ames – he’s had a very quiet year thus far, but a solid one. He’s only missed two cuts this year and has 4 Top 25′s. He’s also Canadian :)

Lucas Glover – G’Lover is coming around and he has some history at this tournament with a T7, T12 and T26 in the past few years.

Paul Casey – aside from a MC at the Masters, he’s all Top 10′s…but is he 100%? I look for him to bounce back with a solid chance at at Top 10.

Stewart Cink – he has the history here with a few wins here. I actually thought he’d do well at Augusta, and maybe a MC there will give him some extra fuel this week.

THE FIELD: FOUR WHO ARE HOT

KJ Choi – most people will be looking at KJ here, not missing a cut all year and have 7 Top 25′s. However, he’s never played this tournament before..so watch out.

Camilo Villegas – stastisically having a great year, quiet masters and a MC before, but he’s still a force and could do very well here.

JB Holmes – lot of Top 25′s, but I can’t trust him, personally. You need to have great irons at Harbour Town and that’s something JB doesn’t have.

Matt Kuchar – lots of great finishes this year and a T7 at Hilton Head two years ago.

THE FIELD: FOUR WHO HAVE HISTORY

Davis Love III - he loves Hilton Head and I remember picking him last year. He says he feels more relaxed than ever. I think he’s a stretch for a win, but he’s had a few bright spots this year and I think he’ll find another one.

Jim Furyk - So many Top 10′s here, I think he’s a lock for another one this week.

Brian Gay - Sure, he won last year, but he’s also had a T16 and a T9 in the past few years. I don’t think his game is where it needs to be this year, so I can’t trust him.

Kevin Na – MC last year, but 14 and 7 the years before..and he’s been very solid over the past year.

THE FINAL FOUR: Jim Furyk, Lucas Glover, Kevin Na, Matt Kuchar

I have a good feeling about Villegas and I think Love will bounce back too, but we’ll see how it all plays out. It should be a great week.

Pick with your heart,

D

The Masters: Field Analysis Recap

Well, Sunday was a treat for everyone. Watching the back 9 on CBS was like floating among the clouds, watching the gods do what they do best.

My sleepers (McIlroy, Kaymer and Quiros) didn’t perform, which is no real surprise, and I’m really just left wondering, what’s up with Rory?

I couldn’t have been happier that AK, Tiger, Watney, Mahan and Poulter were on the leaderboard.

Here’s my recap for guys I had picked for the Top 10:

  • Tiger “Tiger” Woods – T4
  • Anthony “AK” Kim – 3
  • Paul “My shoulder doesn’t hurt” Casey – MC
  • Ian “I haven’t played in a month” Poulter – T10
  • Retief “The Gooseman” Goosen – T38
  • Ernie “Not Bert” Els – T18

Not too bad, not just for me, but for some golfers who will have some confidence going to Harbour Town.

I’ll make one note about Tiger: he looked like he played awful and still gets a T4. Pebble Beach and St. Andrews, watch out.

No one can be upset about the results from The Masters. Congrats, Phil.

Masters Wednesday: Nike Golf Athlete Photos

I had a great time attending the Masters Wednesday practice round and Par 3 contest. On Wednesday morning I took a tour of the back 9 where I was able to see several of the Nike Golf athletes, most notably Stewart Cink and Lucas Glover who I caught up with on the 15th hole. I followed them in for their last 3 1/2 holes, and shot several photos of them finishing their practice round. Because of timing I actually missed seeing Tiger in person, who was coming up hole #8 when I was heading down #10 (I had an hour to see the back 9 before meeting friends up near the clubhouse), so thanks to my friends Tim, John and Drew for their photos of Tiger on hole #9, as well as their photos of David Duval on the back 9. There are also photos of Francesco Molinari, Justin Leonard and Charl Schwatrzel.

Note: I also shot several videos, look for those to be posted shortly.

Masters Wednesday: The Big Three at the Par 3 Contest

One of the highlights of Masters Wednesday is the Par 3 contest, and the highlight of this year’s contest was The Big Three — Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player — playing together as a threesome. Arnie and Jack were the honorary starters on Thursday morning, and I don’t think it will be long (a year or two at the most in my opinion) before Gary joins them to make the official starters a threesome.

My friends and I caught up with them at the 5th green on the Par 3 course, and followed them through the 7th tee. Below are some photos and two videos we shot as they were playing holes 5, 6 and 7 (thanks again to Drew, John and Tim for their photos that I added to mine below).

Masters Wednesday: Practice Round and Par 3 Contest Photos

Attending any round of the Masters is truly an unbelievable experience for a rabid golf fan like myself, and I feel that the Wednesday practice round and par 3 contest is one of the more special days of Masters week (I also attended the Wednesday practice round in 1999). Not only can you wander the course and shoot pictures at will (you can’t bring your camera in on any of the tournament days), the par 3 contest offers the opportunity to see many past and present players who may not be playing in the tournament, in the intimate setting that is the Augusta National Par 3 course.

I shot a bunch of photos of the Wednesday practice round and par 3 contest and wanted to share them with you here. If you’ve never been to Augusta National, obviously I recommend going if you ever get the chance. Until that happens I hope these photos give you a sense of what it’s like to wander the grounds of one of the most famous major golf tournament venues in the world. If you’ve been to the Masters you know what I’m talking about, and I hope these photos can be a reminder of what a special place Augusta National Golf Club is.

Note: I also shot several videos, look for those to be posted shortly.

Masters Preview: Nike Golf Athletes at Augusta

The first week of April is here, and the kickoff of the golf season for many starts this week. The season of golf’s majors also starts this week on Thursday with the first round of The Masters. I was lucky enough to get a ticket to the Wednesday practice round and par 3 contest (thanks to my friend Tim McCormack), and the opportunity to check out the course the day before the tournament starts (I’m actually writing this post on the way there). I’ll post photos and maybe a video or two from that soon.

On Thursday morning, the opening tee shots of the tournament will be struck by Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus (I think we can look for Gary Player to fill out the trio in the next few years). Also on Thursday, 11 Nike Golf athletes will tee it up at Augusta National, here’s the full list:

Paul Casey
Stewart Cink
David Duval
Simon Dyson
Lucas Glover
Trevor Immelman
Anthony Kim
Justin Leonard
Francesco Molinari
Charl Schwartzel
Tiger Woods

Every one of these Nike athletes will be looking to conquer Augusta National’s challenging layout and come away with the green jacket and the Masters trophy on Sunday. Here I choose five that I feel have a chance at doing just that:

MY FIVE TO WATCH:

Charl Schwartzel
Charl won the first two events on the 2010 European Tour schedule, and has followed that up with a recent T2 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and a T3 at last week’s Shell Houston Open. Look for him to be high on the leaderboard on Sunday.

Paul Casey
Paul is primed and ready for the 2010 major season, and look for a strong showing from Paul at this year’s Masters. Paul WD’d from last week’s Shell Houston Open with a shoulder problem, which we hope will not hinder his performance at Augusta. If the shoulder is not prohibitive, look for Paul to threaten the lead on Sunday.

Anthony Kim
AK is fresh off his win at the Shell Houston Open, and he takes a high level of confidence with him to Augusta. It is rare for the previous week’s winner to win The Masters the following week, but if anyone has the confidence and game to do it, AK does.

Francesco Molinari
Francesco is the younger half of the first duo of brothers to play in the same Masters tournament in 10 years. Francesco won with brother Eduardo at the Mission Hills World Cup at the end of last year, and several high finishes this year on the European Tour have him primed and ready for a breakthrough performance at this year’s Masters.

Tiger Woods
And then there’s Tiger. A lot has been made of Tiger’s return to competitive golf at The Masters, so I won’t repeat that here. Predictions have run the gamut from him missing the cut to winning. I fall in the latter category — I think he will come out and win the tournament. My rationale is this: after all that has happened in his personal life in the past several months, I think he will be more determined than ever to prove that he is still the best player on the planet.

No matter what happens this weekend at Augusta National, it is sure to be an exciting week of golf at a venue that is rich in history and tradition. We’ll have to see if one of Nike Golf’s athletes becomes part of that history by donning the green jacket on Sunday afternoon.

The Masters: Field Analysis

Breathe it in, folks. It’s Masters Week. It’s here and it’s beautiful.

I honestly haven’t been this excited for a tournament in a long time. However, I’d be more excited if I were Bob, since he’ll be in Augusta for a bit this week. If I had to sum up the Masters in a few words, they would be: Tiger, England, South Africa and everyone else.

I won’t talk much about Tiger — I’ll leave that to TMZ. But I will say, that I loved that he said he was here to win and that he hasn’t even qualified for the Ryder Cup. Let’s let the golf do the talking.

Next topic: It’s tea time. Or tee time. But look at the Englishmen in this tournament (with WG Rankings):

  • Lee Westwood (4)
  • Paul Casey (6)
  • Ian Poulter (7)
  • Luke Donald (22)
  • Ross Fisher (27)
  • Oliver Wilson (39)
  • Simon Dyson (56)
  • Chris Wood (77)

Really, I think Westy, PC and Poults have a great shot at winning. Casey’s record at Augusta is as clean as anyones, but I just hope his shoulder doesn’t bother him too much. I’m going to discount Westwood because of his history at Augusta. I believe he’ll win a major this year, just not this week. But this English drought can’t continue and there’s plenty of talent from across the pond.

South Africa looks great and not just because my family just returned from there. Els, Goosen and Tim Clark all have amazing records at Augusta and they should all be in the Top 25 at the end of the week. The sleeper here is Charl Schwartzel. He’s diced up some tough courses this year and he’s as hot as anyone.

Then you just have to look at everyone else. Mickelson, Furyk, Ogilvy and then all the other young studs like O’Hair, Watney, Villegas and others. I’m gonna give you another one to watch; Stewart Cink. He has a pretty clean record at Augusta, so he’s definitely worth a look this week. He’s been quiet this year, but I hope to see him around on Sunday.

My two big sleepers are Rory “The Kid” McIlroy and Martin “Not Kramer” Kaymer. Rory has been sub-par this season and this could be the week he breaks out and shocks people, though it should be no surprise. Kaymer just hasn’t had much luck on American soil, but don’t be surprised to see them in contention. I want to call Alvaro “The Bomb” Quiros a sleeper, but he’s been amazing this year with a 33, 14 and 6 in his past three tournaments.

Other guys that are sleepers are Sergio and all of the past winners, actually. For instance, who is going to pick Angel Cabrera to win? No one. I like Weirsy a lot, not because I’m Canadian, but he’s had a lot of good rounds this and he should have a great weekend.

I’m going to give you a list of a few guys of who I think will be in the Top 10 this week:

  • Tiger “Tiger” Woods
  • Anthony “AK” Kim
  • Paul “My shoulder doesn’t hurt” Casey
  • Ian “I haven’t played in a month” Poulter
  • Retief “The Gooseman” Goosen
  • Ernie “Not Bert” Els

I’m excited that Tiger is back and I would truly like to see him dominate the field and win by 5 shots. But I know that the other golfers are excited he’s back too to show the world what they’ve got. I will never forget AK’s 11 straight birdies last year…and after a win last week, and knowing he can hang with Tiger (see AT&T last year)..you all know what he’s capable of.

My top 3 guys are all Nike boys…but it’s no surprise, they’re starting to dominate the world…and really, who saw Charl Schwartzel coming out of the blue? Nike.

I feel like this will be one of the most competitive tournaments I will ever remember. I’ve gone on and on about the players..and I feel like I’ve named almost all of them, but my eyes will be locked this weekend and yours should be too.

Get your popcorn ready.
