NG Nation Fantasy Four: Crowne Plaza Recap

The first month of the NG Nation Fantasy Four is in the books and we have a come from behind winner!

Congratulations to Lendell D., for his win. Ben Crane’s Top 10 finish sealed the win over Meredith Wang who only posted a Top 25.

My Fantasy Four won this week thanks to a Top 10 from Ben Crane and a Top 25 from Paul Casey.

Phil Mickelson, Tim Clark, Steve Stricker and Ian Poulter were the big letdowns for the week, but Phil and Stricks look to rebound next week.

Below are the weekly and first month standings;

Remember, it’s never too late to join as there are still monthly winners (12 Nike ONE Vapor Speed Balls) and an overall season winner (Nike VR or SQ Machspeed Driver) until the FedEx Cup is awarded. Keep playing and keep your heads high.

Next week is a biggie as we head to the Memorial Tournament. Lendell, NGNation.com will be in touch with you!

Stay tuned,

D.

NG Nation Fantasy Four: Crowne Plaza Invitational

The stars have come out for the third leg of the Texas swing. We’ve got 5 of the Top 10 World Golf Ranked players and 6 of the Top 10 Money Leaders on Tour this year. That doesn’t even include Henrik Stenson, YE Yang, Geoff Ogilvy, Nick Watney, Sean O’Hair and other top notch studs. It should be a doozy and there couldn’t be a tournament better to finish the first month of the NG Nation Fantasy Four Contest.

This is Week 4 of the NG Nation Fantasy Four Contest and it’s never too late to join. For a refresher on the rules, hit the link — Contest Guidelines >>

NIKE GOLF : Four to Watch

Stephen Ames
Last two starts have been shaky, but he was very consistent before that. Not a bad record at Colonial; T27 in ’09, 4th in ’08, T4 in ’06, 3rd in ’04. It seems like he does well on even numbered years. That might entice some people.

Paul Casey
Coming off a T17 at the BMW PGA Championship, I think Casey proved he is healthy. He was the hottest golfer on the planet before he was injured and I think he’s at full health. He also had a solo 5th at Colonial last year in his only outing.

Lucas Glover
G’Lover’s last two starts have been encouraging, T22 at Quail Hollow and 3rd at The Players. T15 here in ’08,  T29 in ’07 is as good at it gets at Colonial, and he’s playing well so I think he can do very well here.

Stewart Cink
Even though he was the only Nike golfer to get a Top 25 last week, he still wants to be playing better. T22 here in ’09, T18 in ’07, T4 in ’06, T14 in ’04, T13 in ’03, T33 in ’02, T26 in ’01 and 2nd in ’00… should all give him confidence heading into this week. Keep your eyes open.

THE FIELD : Four Who Are Hot

Phil Mickelson
Phil has a lot of pressure on him this week and I think he’ll come through. A two-time winner at Colonial (2000 and 2008) and coming off a 1st, 2nd and 17th, some think he may choke under the pressure, but he has a great record here.

Jason Day
Coming off a win, Day has been quite consistent so far this year. 4 of his last 6 starts have been Top 25′s, but I wanted to include him because he just missed out on a playoff here last year with a solo 4th. Big sleeper this week.

Ben Crane
In his last 6 starts, he has 2 Top 10′s and 5 Top 25′s. That’s pretty hot. Solo 5th at Colonial in ’08, T4 in ’06, T17 ’05. He’s hot and has history.

Fredrik Jacobsen
Also in his last 6 starts, he has 3 Top 10′s and 5 Top 25′s. Even hotter than Crane, if you ask the ladies. T17 in ’06, 16th in ’05  are his best finishes here, but he could be a shocker.

THE FIELD : Four Who Have History

Steve Stricker
The questions with Stricker’s health will prevail but he is the defending champion and has a few MC’s here, but also has 2 Top 10′s and 3 Top 25′s. The buzz is all about Phil, but Stricker was No.2 in the world not so long ago.

Tim Clark
Coming off a win at the Players, Clarky had a T2 in ’09, T2 in ’08 and T12 in ’07, T21 in ’05. I think he’s drooling at the chance to pick up back-to-back wins with a stellar record at Colonial.

Kenny Perry
Another two-time winner at Colonial (2003 and 2005). He hasn’t had a Top 25 here since his last win, though his last two starts were  a T22 at The Players and T16 at The Byron Nelson.

Jim Furyk
Furyk has been a fantasy work horse this year. The only question is his last start was a T47 at The Players, but he still has two wins and a bunch of top 10′s this year. His record here is incredible with 6 Top 10′s and most recently having a T9 here last year.

FINAL FOUR : Ian Poulter, Ben Crane, Phil Mickelson and Paul Casey

I know, Poulter didn’t fit into one of the categories, but I have a feeling. The only clear choice to me was Phil. I could have taken all 4 Nike Golfers and be happy. It hurts to leave Clark and Marino off this list, too. I would pick about 10 players who I think can actually win, but we’re limited for a foursome.

I couldn’t fit Poulter, Mahan, O’Hair, Stenson, DJ, Kuchar, Verplank, Na, Perez, Gay and other golfers into the actual categories, but don’t forget about them. I still have questions about Stricker, but I’m taking Crane  instead of big names like Furyk or Mahan. I didn’t even include Justin Leonard and he has a bunch of Top 15′s here in the recent years with a 2nd in ’03. It’s a tough week for picks, but it’s a great way to finish the first month of the contest.

NG Nation Fantasy Four: Byron Nelson Recap

Another fun week on Tour with a lot of young guns and some low rounds by good players.
Everyone’s picks were decent. There were glimmers of hope by Mahan (+5 in the Final Round hurts) and Sabbatini, but I think it was another hard week to pick. Justin Leonard hurt with a T26, but at least he made the cut. Here’s how my Fantasy Four fared;

Hunter Mahan – T50 (0 pts)
Justin Leonard – T26 (0 pts)
Sean O’Hair – T12 (2 pts)
Scott Verplank – T5 (5 pts + 2 pts)

I’m pretty happy with my week. I thought Slocum and Crane would do well, and they did. Cink was the only Nike Golfer to pick up any points with a T25.

There were 4 DQ’d entries (3 late and 1 didn’t have a Nike golfer), but they wouldn’t have won this week.

This week’s winner is Lendell, who is a close second for the season and has a chance to win the monthly price. The winning team was Verplank, Crane, Mahan and Petterson with a pair of Top 10′s.

Below are the fantasy results from the Byron Nelson Championship and the overall season;

Meredith holds a slim lead. Only one week left for this month’s contest (for a dozen Nike ONE Vapors) and it’s still anyone’s race. A win and a couple top 10′s is a lot of points and the field is stacked next week at the Crowne Plaza Invitational.

Stay tuned,

D.

Nike SQ MachSpeed STR8-FIT Driver Product Reviews

The SQ MachSpeed STR8-FIT driver arrived in retail stores on March 1st, and in the first three months of its release it has received a lot of attention for its cutting edge design and the resulting benefits of the aerodynamic technologies incorporated into this club. Designed to increase clubhead speed and increase distance as a result, the SQ MachSpeed driver quickly found its way into Nike athlete Justin Leonard’s bag — in fact Justin couldn’t get this club into his bag quick enough.

Nike Golf sent me one of these drivers to review back in April, and in case you haven’t checked it out yet you can read my review here. I was surprised not only by the distance I gained, but how accurate my drives were with this club. Of course mine is only one opinion, so as a service to NG Nation’s readers and those of you researching whether the SQ MachSpeed STR8-FIT is the right driver for you, I’ve done a little bit of legwork for you — below are links to reviews of this driver on a few other blogs and web sites. You already know what I think of the SQ MachSpeed, now see what some of the other reviewers think of it. I hope this helps you decide whether it’s the right driver for you.

Nike VR STR8-FIT Tour Driver Product Reviews

At the end of January, Nike Golf released its much anticipated VR STR8-FIT Tour Driver, featuring 32-position STR8-FIT adjustability and the new compression channelthat adds forgiveness for mis-hits low on the club face. I had the opportunity to review this new driver, and in case you haven’t checked it out yet you can read my review here.

The VR STR8-FIT Driver has been very well received in the first few months it’s been available, and my review is only one of several touting the features of this powerful new driver. So for the convenience of those of you researching whether the VR STR8-FIT is the right driver for you, I’ve done a little bit of legwork for you — below are links to reviews of the VR STR8-FIT Driver on several other blogs and web sites. You already know what I think of this (great) new driver, now see what some of the other reviewers think of it. I hope this helps you decide whether the VR STR8-FIT is the right driver for you.

NG Nation Fantasy Four: Byron Nelson Championship

Welcome to the second stop on the Texas swing. Most of the field will stay the same through these tournaments, but some bigger guns are added this week (Dustin Johnson, Hunter Mahan, Sean O’Hair, YE Yang and Katy Perry). Yes, I call him Katy Perry (only out of love).

This is Week 3 of the NG Nation Fantasy Four Contest and it’s never too late to join. For a refresher on the rules, hit the link — Contest Guidelines >>

NIKE GOLF: Three to Watch

Justin Leonard
While last week’s MDF hurt Leonard after shooting a 69, he has a good record at this event, just like any on the Texas swing. He finished T16 in ’09, T19 in ’08, T26 in ’06 and a bunch of made cuts. Don’t discount him if he let you down last week, he’ll be looking to rebound in a strong way.

Stewart Cink
Cink has had a few rough outings as of late and he also hasn’t played this event since 2005, so you know he’s looking to get something going. G’Lover had his rebound week at The Players and I think Cink will have his here.

Carl Pettersson
Pettersson made his 7th straight cut last week with a T22 at the Texas Open. At this event he’s been pretty good; Just missed the cut last year, T4 in ’08, T19 in’07, T21 in ’06 and a T34 in ’04. I’d count on another Top 25 this week, at least.

THE FIELD: Four Who Are Hot

JB Holmes
He played well last week, aside from getting tired at the end of the last round and he’s been very good this year. Back-to-back T13′s isn’t bad. He has a couple MC’s here in ’06 and ’07.

Hunter Mahan
Hunter is pretty hot and always heats up around this time. His last 3 starts have been big events; T8 at The Masters, T17 at Quail Hollow and T17 at The Players. Doesn’t have great results here, but has a bunch of made cuts, which is still good given the way he’s playing now.

Bo Van PeltWD as of Tuesday

Ben Crane
Ben’s last finish was a T4 at The Players and aside from two MC’s, he’s had a win, T9 and a string of Top 30′s. He’s been as consistent as anyone this year. He’s had a few starts here with his best finishes being T25 and T26 in ’07 and ’06.

Heath Slocum
I didn’t even know he was hot. That sounds like something a teenage girl would say. In his last 4 starts he has 2 Top 10′s, a T18 and T29. That’s pretty good, especially the T4 at The Players. Not a great record here, aside from a T18 in ’05.

THE FIELD: Four Who Have History

Rory Sabbatini
Last year he won this event after a MC at The Players, but he made the cut at The Players this year and has a good record. MC in ’07, but T3 in ’06, T14 in ’05, T21 in ’04. I think he’ll get a Top 25 this week.

Scott Verplank
Texas boys loved the Texas swing and Verplank has been unreal at this event.  While the past two years have not been kind, he finished 1st in ’07, T6 in ’05, T14 in ’04, 4th in ’03 and is coming off a T13 at The Players. Way to leave him off your Power Rankings, PGATour.com. I’m looking for a Top 10 from Verplank.

Vijay Singh
While Vijay isn’t playing his best golf, he had a T16 in ’09, T13 in ’07, T3 in ’05 and 1st in ’03. Being put out of the Top 50 this past week in the World Golf Rankings may motivate Vijay a bit more and he should have a good week here.

Sean O’Hair
O’Hairsy is coming in a little under the radar here. He’s been very quiet this year with a bunch of Top 30′s. At this event he’s finished 25 in ’07, T19 in ’06 and 2nd in ’05. He’s definitely a sleeper, but he knows the course and has the game.

FINAL FOUR: Hunter Mahan, Sean O’Hair, Scott Verplank and Justin Leonard

If I had to add a fifth, it would be Heath Slocum. I’ll admit, I haven’t given him credit since he won The Barclays, but he’s hot and I’m curious to see if he can keep it up.  Leonard or Pettersson was a tough choice, so maybe someone will take both of them in their Fantasy Four.

It seems like all the past champions have been familiar with the course, even if they haven’t had the best records, so that’s why I picked who I did.

Leave your Fantasy Four below and tell your friends! (even though your odds will decrease…hmmm, why would you do that?) Remember, you need at least ONE Nike Golfer and can pick from anyone in the field. Good luck.

Pick with your heart,

D
