Welcome to the second stop on the Texas swing. Most of the field will stay the same through these tournaments, but some bigger guns are added this week (Dustin Johnson, Hunter Mahan, Sean O’Hair, YE Yang and Katy Perry). Yes, I call him Katy Perry (only out of love).
This is Week 3 of the NG Nation Fantasy Four Contest and it’s never too late to join. For a refresher on the rules, hit the link — Contest Guidelines >>
NIKE GOLF: Three to Watch
While last week’s MDF hurt Leonard after shooting a 69, he has a good record at this event, just like any on the Texas swing. He finished T16 in ’09, T19 in ’08, T26 in ’06 and a bunch of made cuts. Don’t discount him if he let you down last week, he’ll be looking to rebound in a strong way.
Cink has had a few rough outings as of late and he also hasn’t played this event since 2005, so you know he’s looking to get something going. G’Lover had his rebound week at The Players and I think Cink will have his here.
Pettersson made his 7th straight cut last week with a T22 at the Texas Open. At this event he’s been pretty good; Just missed the cut last year, T4 in ’08, T19 in’07, T21 in ’06 and a T34 in ’04. I’d count on another Top 25 this week, at least.
THE FIELD: Four Who Are Hot
He played well last week, aside from getting tired at the end of the last round and he’s been very good this year. Back-to-back T13’s isn’t bad. He has a couple MC’s here in ’06 and ’07.
Hunter is pretty hot and always heats up around this time. His last 3 starts have been big events; T8 at The Masters, T17 at Quail Hollow and T17 at The Players. Doesn’t have great results here, but has a bunch of made cuts, which is still good given the way he’s playing now.
Bo Van Pelt – WD as of Tuesday
Ben’s last finish was a T4 at The Players and aside from two MC’s, he’s had a win, T9 and a string of Top 30’s. He’s been as consistent as anyone this year. He’s had a few starts here with his best finishes being T25 and T26 in ’07 and ’06.
I didn’t even know he was hot. That sounds like something a teenage girl would say. In his last 4 starts he has 2 Top 10’s, a T18 and T29. That’s pretty good, especially the T4 at The Players. Not a great record here, aside from a T18 in ’05.
THE FIELD: Four Who Have History
Last year he won this event after a MC at The Players, but he made the cut at The Players this year and has a good record. MC in ’07, but T3 in ’06, T14 in ’05, T21 in ’04. I think he’ll get a Top 25 this week.
Texas boys loved the Texas swing and Verplank has been unreal at this event. While the past two years have not been kind, he finished 1st in ’07, T6 in ’05, T14 in ’04, 4th in ’03 and is coming off a T13 at The Players. Way to leave him off your Power Rankings, PGATour.com. I’m looking for a Top 10 from Verplank.
While Vijay isn’t playing his best golf, he had a T16 in ’09, T13 in ’07, T3 in ’05 and 1st in ’03. Being put out of the Top 50 this past week in the World Golf Rankings may motivate Vijay a bit more and he should have a good week here.
O’Hairsy is coming in a little under the radar here. He’s been very quiet this year with a bunch of Top 30’s. At this event he’s finished 25 in ’07, T19 in ’06 and 2nd in ’05. He’s definitely a sleeper, but he knows the course and has the game.
FINAL FOUR: Hunter Mahan, Sean O’Hair, Scott Verplank and Justin Leonard
If I had to add a fifth, it would be Heath Slocum. I’ll admit, I haven’t given him credit since he won The Barclays, but he’s hot and I’m curious to see if he can keep it up. Leonard or Pettersson was a tough choice, so maybe someone will take both of them in their Fantasy Four.
It seems like all the past champions have been familiar with the course, even if they haven’t had the best records, so that’s why I picked who I did.
Leave your Fantasy Four below and tell your friends! (even though your odds will decrease…hmmm, why would you do that?) Remember, you need at least ONE Nike Golfer and can pick from anyone in the field. Good luck.
Pick with your heart,
also, if you want to follow me on twitter, that would be fine. I know most of you are on there (@d_daniels).
