I’m a big Nike fan, and that extends well beyond Nike Golf, but one of the things I like most about Nike is its limited edition items (e.g. the NYC Pigeon Dunk). When it comes to golf however, Nike Golf athletes receive some of the coolest special edition items for each of the four majors.
When the Nike athletes arrived at the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach this week, they had more than just their scripting ready for them. Here’s a look at some of the special gear both from this week and past majors:
Early in the week, Nike’s apparel team brought a bag for each athlete. In the bags, the athletes received a commemorative track jacket and a pair of custom Air Force 1s, among other items. The track jacket came in both blue and white, with the white versions reserved for Nike’s two U.S. open winners: Tiger Woods and Lucas Glover.
The blue version, shown here, was provided to the other eleven players in the field. On both versions, there is a 2010 U.S. Open banner on the lower back of the jacket.
For off-the-course footwear, Nike decided to once again go with the Air Force 1, but this time in a white/white colorway. The shoe features the U.S. Open banner on the left outside heel with the player’s initials on the right outside heel.
However, Tiger Woods and Lucas Glover have different shoes with a tribute to their titles on their shoe. Tiger’s includes all three U.S. Open title references in ’00, ’02, and ’08.
In contrast, here is last year’s U.S. Open Air Force 1:
I guess Nike wasn’t receptive to my suggestion for this year’s shoe using the Nike Free 5.0. I guess the Air Force 1 is a little more patriotic, although this is the land of the FREE after all isn’t it?
Finally, since this is the second major of the year, I thought I’d include some of the commemorative gear from the first major at The Masters. While this trainer shoe certainly had the spirit of Augusta, I still think that 2008’s Nike Dunk version was slightly cooler. That’s all for now, good luck to all the athletes and Nike support team at Pebble Beach!
