Product Review: SQ MachSpeed Fairway Wood

Last month I had the opportunity to test and review Nike Golf’s new SQ MachSpeed driver, and I was duly impressed not only by how far I hit it (I gained about 10-15 yards), but especially how straight my shots went. I was curious to see if the technology used in the driver (utilizing advanced aerodynamics to increase clubhead speed) would translate to the fairway woods. I had the chance to find out when Nike Golf sent me a 3-wood to test out and review. I promptly took it to the range to find out, and I share my findings with you here.

FIRST IMPRESSION: DESIGN/APPEARANCE

There’s no mistaking the look of the SQ Machspeed fairway wood — it features the same square head shape as the driver, as well as the same aerodynamic powerbow diffuser on the front and trailing edges. It has a similar diffuser in the sole plate as the driver (designed to reduce drag and encourage maximum acceleration of the clubhead during the swing), but it is smaller in the fairway wood, presumably to keep the sole plate smooth so the club won’t catch on the turf

The glossy black paint finish on the crown and sides is the same as the driver, and it features a stock UST Mamiya AXIVCore shaft and Nike grip. The headcover has the same silver sheen and sleek design as the driver headcover, with a magnetic closure at the neck and elastic at the underside of the top opening that keeps the headcover in place when it’s on, and makes it very easy to get on and off. The sides feature the same black foam material with the MachSpeed logo on one side and Nike swoosh on the other.

FIRST IMPRESSION: PERFORMANCE

When I first swung the fairway wood on the range I was reminded of the speed and “straightness” of the driver — it really seemed like I was able to swing the clubhead faster and straighter through the hitting zone. Like with the driver I was again impressed at how straight the clubhead sets up to the ball when resting on the ground, which I think will be a real help to mid and high handicappers in getting the club set up straight at the target. The lines of the square clubhead also seem to promote a straight swing path through the ball.

PLAYABILITY

By far the most notable characteristic of this club (like the driver) was how straight I hit it. Shot after shot I was able to fire the ball straight at my target, and my mis-hits did not curve off line as much. That being said, when I wanted to I was able to hit a fade and a draw with this club without trouble.

DISTANCE

I did not use a launch monitor for this test, but judging by the distance markers on the range I saw a noticeable increase in distance with this club — I was able to hit the SQ MachSpeed 3-wood about 10 yards farther than my SQ Dymo 3-wood, and just about as far as my VR 3-wood.

ACCURACY

The most impressive characteristic of this club was how straight I hit it.  When I was not actively trying to hit a draw or a fade, I was able to hit this club dead straight time after time. When I did mishit this club, my misses went straighter. If you’re looking for a club that can help you hit more fairways and greens, this one is worth looking at.

FORGIVENESS

As well as being forgiving by hitting the ball straighter, the SQ MachSpeed fairway wood was very forgiving distance-wise on mishit shots. If I missed the middle of the club face, I was impressed at the distance I still got —the shot traveled almost as far as a shot that I hit on the sweet spot.

ACOUSTICS

Of note in my test was the lack of the slightly louder sound at impact in the MachSpeed fairway wood that was present in the driver. Even though the driver sound was not at all bothersome to me, I did notice that the fairway wood sounded much like a typical fairway wood, similar to the sound my Dymo fairway wood makes.

SUMMARY

Nike Golf has another winner with the SQ MachSpeed fairway woods. This club is a perfect companion to the SQ MachSpeed driver, one that goes long and especially straight off both the tee and the fairway. I was most impressed by how straight I hit this club, but I was still able to work the ball with it when I needed to. I think this club can really help the average golfer (the mid to high handicapper) hit more fairways and greens. If you’re looking for a go-to club that will help you make the ball go straight when you need it to, I suggest checking out the SQ MachSpeed fairway woods.

LPGA Championship Preview: Nike Golf Athlete Scripting

This week is the second major of the year on the LPGA Tour, the LPGA Championship, and Nike Golf athletes Suzann Pettersen, Michelle Wie and Amanda Blumenherst are set to take on Locust Hill Country Club in style. Earlier this week Nike Golf tweeted out photos of the scripting these three athletes will wear, and from the looks of the photos the athletes will be looking sharp per usual. Here are the outfits Suzann, Michelle and Amanda will be wearing this week:

This is Suzann’s scripting:

Here is Michelle’s:

And here is Amanda’s:

If these ladies perform as great as their apparel looks this week, we should see all three at the top of the leaderboard on Sunday. Good luck this week Suzann, Michelle and Amanda!

Fantasy Four: Travelers Championship

People are saying this is a weak field, but that’s ridiculous. Cink, Kuchar, Mahan, Van Pelt, Harrington, Fowler, Rose, Goosen and Scott are all looking to pick up at win at a great venue. I’m sure the players couldn’t be more excited to go low after a grueling week at Pebble Beach. This week we head to the TPC at River Highlands where we should have a shootout with some familiar faces in the hunt.

This is Week 8 during Month 2 of the NG Nation Fantasy Four and it’s never too late to join. For a refresher on the rules, hit the link — Contest Guidelines and leave your Fantasy Four below.

NIKE GOLF: Two to Watch

Stewart Cink
Cink is a two-time winner here (1997, 2008) and has played well as of late. Other than his T40 at the US Open, his last start have been T8 and a couple of other Top 25′s. I think Cink will finish very high this week and is among the favourites to win it.

Carl Pettersson
Three of his last
four starts have been Top 30′s. At this event he’s had a T37 in ’08, T15 in ’07 and T31 in ’06. Nothing too special, so I wouldn’t expect much, but he could be a good sleeper since he’s familiar with the course and playing decent.

THE FIELD: Four Who Are Hot

Justin Rose
Recent starts –  1st at Memorial
He’s only played two tournaments in the past month and I think he’s enjoyed his time off since his win at Memorial.
Rose had a T19 here in ’08, T9 in ’07 and a T5 in ’05, so he should be full of confidence heading into this week.

Matt Kuchar — WD as of Wednesday morning

Ricky Barnes
Recent starts – T27 at US Open, T3 at Memorial, T7 at Crowne Plaza
I don’t give Barnes a lot of credit, but he is playing well. T58 last year is his only start, but he can contend again.

Bo Van Pelt
Recent starts – T40 at US Open, T3 at Memorial, T10 at Crowne Plaza, T4 at The Players, 5th at Quail Hollow, T3 at Verizon
I’m still not sold on Bo Van Pelt. He is playing very well, but he’s only 13th on the Money List. This would be a good week for him to win. I just think he’ll be exhausted and is due for a missed cut, but he did have a T9 at this event last year and a T6 in ’07.

Scott Verplank
Recent starts - T47 at US Open, T5 at Crowne Plaza, T5 at Byron Nelson, T13 at The Players.
He’s been under the radar with his recent finishes, but he’s right up there with the best of them. He had a T9 here last year, T17 in ’08 and a T5 in ’07. He’s been very good here and I think he can keep it up.

THE FIELD: Four Who Have History

Hunter Mahan
Best finishes here
T4 in ’09, T2 in ’08, 1st in ’07, T2 in ’06, T21 in ’04
Coming off of 3 straight MC’s, I’m really looking for Mahan to rebound. He’s a great player with a win this year. His record here is impeccable and I fully expect him to win this week as an underdog.

Ben Curtis
Best finishes hereT4 in ’09, T13 in’08, T21 in ’06, T4 in ’05
Ben is coming off of a T14 at the US Open in addition to his great history at River Highlands.
Curtis is a big sleeper this week at can definitely make a splash.

David Toms
Best finishes here – T2 in ’09, T27 in ’08, T6 in ’07
I just think Toms is another guy due for a win. He hasn’t played amazingly, but he’s had a T33 at the US Open, along with a pair of Top 30′s before that. Maybe history can help him out a bit this week.

Kenny Perry
Best finishes here - 1st in 09, T6 in ’08, T15 in ’07, 7th in ’05
Perry should be the favourite given his record here. Coming off a T33 at the US Open, he posted a quiet string of 4 straight Top 30′s. Perry is coming back into form and should feel very comfortable heading into this week.

FINAL FOUR: Hunter Mahan, Ryan Moore, Brandt Snedeker and Stewart Cink

Smaller field this week, but still very hard to make picks. Kuchar withdrew so I took Snedeker. Ryan Moore is my sleeper of this week, he actually has a very good history here, so maybe he can help me out. Tough not to take Verplank, Van Pelt and Perry, too. Also, Rickie Fowler and Padraig Harrington are playing, along with Vijay.  Also, Adam Scott and Retief are looking to rebound this week, so it’s actually a very good field.

Fantasy Four Recap: 2010 US Open

One thing is funny to me looking back at everyone’s picks; of the 12 people I mentioned in my Fantasy post, Graeme McDowell was the only player who wasn’t selected and he was the winner!

Despite that, and let downs from the Englishmen, we had a very close and high scoring week. The big three of Woods, Els and Mickelson all nabbed Top 10′s, along with Dustin Johnson who still managed a Top 10. However, the key to the winner this week was the Top 25′s. The likes of Sergio, Angel Cabrera, Paddy and Furyk all posted Top 25′s. It was a squeaker, but Sergio’s solid 71 on Sunday gave Bryan D the win. Check the original post for the individual rankings (Mick and Lendell were only 2pts away) >> US Open Fantasy Points

Bryan’s Winning Team: Ernie Els (3), Tiger Woods (T4), Phil Mickelson (T4) and Sergio Garcia (T22).

The monthly standings are below, followed by the season rankings. Mick takes the monthly lead, while Lendell takes the overall lead with a low scoring week from the Fantasy Four Power Couple; Chris and Meredith Wang.

Also, this is the second straight week we have a newcomer. Jane starts with a good 14 points, while Mosher has a respectable follow-up to his domination last week.

Next week is the Travelers Championship where the second monthly winner will be determined! It will be a close race. NG Nation will also have a special one-week contest (with prizes!) for the event.

Stay tuned,

D.

U.S. Open Notes: Nike Golf Athletes in Round 1 at Pebble Beach

It was another spectacular day at Pebble Beach for Round 1 of the U.S. Open, the weather was beautiful and a wind-blown course was playing hard and fast making scoring difficult for the entire field.

I had a great day walking the course and following several of the Nike Golf athletes including Tiger Woods, David Duval, Justin Leonard, Paul Casey, Stephen Ames, Charl Schwartzel, James Morrison and Simon Dyson. Today I wasn’t able to catch up with Stewart Cink, Lucas Glover, Pablo Martin, Francesco Molinari or Trevor Immelman. It was amazing as always to see the throngs of people following Tiger, it was great to hear so many people rooting for David Duval and it was fun to see Paul Casey at the top of the leaderboard and playing well.

Alas, I head back to Phoenix tomorrow after an early morning round of golf, so I’ll be watching the rest of the Open on TV. But if today was any indication, the course will play tough and the field will hard pressed to break par this weekend. We’ll have to see if a Nike athlete is able to make it to the top of the leaderboard – and stay there – on Sunday afternoon.

U.S. Open Wednesday Practice Round Photos

I had an unbelievable day today at Pebble Beach — it was the first time I’ve ever visited the Monterey peninsula and the Pebble Beach Golf Links. I made the trip to Pebble with my friends Bud Garmany and Kim Martino, and after parking at Spyglass Hill and a short ride to the course we were inside the gates. After being greeted by the famous Lodge we hung around the putting green for a bit, and shortly thereafter Tiger showed up after his practice round, signed a few autographs and began to work on his putting. Then after checking out the first hole briefly, we headed inside the Lodge to the famous Tap Room for an early (and delicious) lunch.

After lunch we headed out to the course, and for this first-time visitor Pebble did not disappoint. To the contrary, I was pretty much awestruck with the beauty and severity of the course. We headed out to see the famous holes along the coast — 18, 17, and holes 4 through 10. The views on these holes are truly breathtaking. We then headed inland to see holes 11-16, and then (after getting separated from Bud and  Kim for about two hours) we met back up at the Tap Room for a final drink before heading for the gates.

While out on the course I was able to follow Francesco Molinari for a while, also saw Charl Schwartzel, never caught up with Justin Leonard or Stewart Cink, but did see Lucas Glover on the putting green. I’m heading back to Pebble tomorrow and I can’t wait to see Nike Golf’s athletes in competition in round one.

I hope the photos below give you a small sense of what it’s like to be here at Pebble this week. I also shot several short videos, I’ll try to add those to this post in the next few days. Enjoy!

Tiger, Lucas and David — What Are Their Chances at Pebble Beach?

The U.S. Open returns to Pebble Beach this week after a 10-year hiatus, and it is sure to be a week filled with thrilling golf and breathtaking scenery. As the week unfolds, my thoughts immediately turn to three Nike Golf athletes who have history at this event and at this location. Tiger Woods, Lucas Glover and David Duval are all world-class players who have gone through an interesting last year, all for three different reasons. Here I consider what their chances of winning at Pebble are considering what they have been through in the last year.

The focus is sure to be on Tiger this year as he returns to the venue where he trounced the field in 2000, winning by an unprecedented 15 shots. But things are very different for Tiger this year for several reasons: First of all, this is the first time since he turned professional that Tiger is not the favorite going into the U.S. Open. Secondly, Tiger has been struggling with his game, missing the cut at Quail Hollow and finishing 19th in his last start at the Memorial. He has also been recovering from a neck injury that caused him to withdraw from the Players Championship. Lastly, Tiger is also trying to overcome the off-course distractions that have plagued him for the last 8 months, most recently the parting with his teacher Hank Haney, and speculation on who (if anyone) will replace him.

But for all the reasons one might use to make a case for Tiger not playing well at the Open this year, here are several reasons why I think he will contend: First, the venue — nothing but good memories here at Pebble for Tiger, especially from the last time The Open was held here. Second, Tiger always seems to step up his game for the majors — case in point, this year’s Masters where Tiger scrapped out a 4th place finish while hitting the ball in a very un-Tiger-like fashion. Lastly, Tiger’s pre-tournament preparation this year — despite the current unknown of his coaching situation and his mediocre finish at the Memorial, Tiger seems to have handled the past several weeks as close to his normal routine as he has all year. Memorial, then a week off, then he was out at Pebble on Sunday morning playing practice rounds and getting mentally prepared for the week ahead. In my mind Tiger has a very good chance of challenging for the title on Sunday afternoon, precisely and simply because it’s the U.S. Open, and it’s at Pebble Beach.

Lucas Glover has basked in the limelight of his Open win since taking the trophy at a soggy Bethpage Black last year. The defending champion gained elite status on the PGA Tour with his first major win, but doubters might say it would be difficult, albeit impossible for him to win this year. First of all, it’s difficult to win back-to-back U.S. Opens — the last to do it was Curtis Strange in 1988 and 1989. Secondly Lucas has had an up and down year since his Open win — he’s had 4 top 10 finishes in official events, and his highest finishes this year were a third place finish at the Players and a 9th place finish at The Farmers Insurance Open back in January. At the majors he missed the cut at the Open Championship at Turnberry, finished 5th at the PGA and T36 at The Masters. Lastly his putting has let him down — he currently ranks 104th in putting and needs to get his putter working if he is to contend at Pebble.

I think Lucas has a real chance of contending at the Open this year for three reasons: His game is suited to Pebble Beach — he hits it long and he’s not afraid to hit driver where he needs to (key on holes 9, 10 and 13 which have been lengthened this year), and his short game can get him out of any trouble he gets into. Secondly, his attitude after last year’s win — he basically is the same low-key person he was before his major win, and his down-to-earth demeanor could serve him well at Pebble as it did at Bethpage. Lastly, missed cuts – Lucas missed the cut at The Players the three years prior to his 3rd place finish this year, and he’s missed the cut at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am the last three years also. A stretch? Maybe, but I look for Lucas to not only make the cut but also have a high finish at Pebble this week.

David Duval has had a difficult year since contending at last year’s Open at Bethpage, finishing in a tie for second place with Phil Mickelson and Ricky Barnes. The high of almost winning a major (and perhaps the low of not winning) resulted in a year of inconsistent play and a string of missed cuts. His highest finish since then was his T2 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February. But I think these two second place finishes are precisely what I think will power David to a high finish at Pebble this week — his memories of what he accomplished in the Open at Bethpage last year and at Pebble earlier this year. Add to that a more grounded perspective gained from family life, and I look for a calm, steady performance that could very well put David in contention this weekend.

It’s sure to be an exciting four days at Pebble Beach this weekend, and we’ll have to see if Tiger, Lucas or David can make a run at the title. But if you ask me, I would not be surprised to see all three in the top 25, with at least two cracking the top 10. Who knows, maybe one of them will end up hoisting the trophy on Sunday afternoon.
