UPDATE 8.11.10 4:15p PST: In his press conference today, as well as on Twitter this morning, U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Corey Pavin denied reports that he said he would use one of his four captain’s picks to select Tiger for the team if he does not qualify on points. Pavin said he would not make any such announcement of his captain’s picks until September 7th. Jim Gray stands by his original report. Apparently a tense exchange occurred between Gray and Pavin after Pavin’s press conference. The bottom line is it sounds like we’ll need to wait until September 7th to see if Tiger either qualifies for the team on points or Pavin chooses him for the team with a captain’s pick.
UPDATE 8.11.10 9:15a PST: Apparently there is some controversy over whether Captain Corey Pavin actually said he would pick Tiger if he didn’t qualify on points. More info is coming from Gray and the Golf Channel shortly, but now the question exists if he would give Tiger a captain’s pick if it came to that (hence I’ve added a question mark to my headline). What do you think — would Pavin pick Woods?
This may not be a big surprise to some, but tonight The Golf Channel’s Jim Gray is reporting that he spoke to U.S. Ryder Cup Team Captain Corey Pavin who said he will select Tiger Woods with one of his captain’s picks if he does not automatically qualify on points. Earlier today Gray asked Tiger Woods in his press conference if he would accept a Captain’s pick to be on the 2010 U.S. Ryder Cup team if he was offered one, to which Tiger responded “yes”. This was his first indication he would do so after being asked several times previously — Tiger had stated he wanted to play his way onto the team, which he reiterated in today’s press conference. Pavin also mentioned to Gray that he was happy that Tiger would accept an invitation if offered. It’s still possible that Tiger will make it onto the team on points alone, but either way, and barring a Tiger Woods injury or some other unforeseen circumstance, it looks like Team Europe will need to face the current world #1 as part of Team U.S.A. when they do battle at The Ryder Cup Celtic Manor in October.
