UPDATE 10.1.10 Editor’s Note: I received official word from Nike Golf this morning, so I’ve updated this post to reflect that info.
David Duval’s time with Nike Golf has to an end. Nike Golf has confirmed that David is no longer a Nike athlete. In the first round of the Viking Classic, David Duval was seen playing with no swooshes in sight — he was wearing different footwear and apparel, and using a mixed bag of equipment, none of it Nike. You can see what I’m talking about here in these photos from the first round of the Viking Classic. In a forum post on Golfwrx.com there is much talk of David’s departure from Nike Golf. He was seen playing in late season events with a new driver, and now he has switched out the rest of his equipment as well.
Because David’s contract is up and he’ll no longer be sponsored by Nike Golf, this is a sad day for me — I’m a long-time fan of David’s (from before he was even with Nike Golf), and he was the first athlete to win a professional event using Nike irons (the 2001 Open Championship). I’ve been rooting hard for him during his comeback over the last several years, and even written a couple of posts about it (here and here). No matter where David ends up sponsorship-wise, I’ll still be rooting for him.
Best of luck David, you’ll be missed, but I know we haven’t heard the last from you.
