The LPGA 2010 season wraps up this weekend in Orlando, Florida. I have to say that this is a great finishing event. In a year that usually finishes and ends with a clear number one player, this LPGA season has seen more Number 1 rankings than a Glee cover on the Top 40.
The LPGA Tour Championship boasts a two-cut format. The initial field will be cut to 70 after 36 holes and then 30 players will remain after 54 holes. This is a huge event for all the LPGA ladies as they’ve had 3 weeks to prepare for this event. Here’s a look at what’s on the line this week;
- Vare Trophy (lowest scoring average)
- LPGA Money Leader
- Rolex Player of the Year Award
- Rolex #1 World Ranking
- Category 1 Status (full exemptions for 2011) for Top 80 on Money List
All 3 of Nike’s LPGA Athletes (Amanda Blumenherst, Suzann Pettersen and Michelle Wie) have qualified for the Tour Championship, but only two will compete.
Suzann Pettersen is one of the most consistent golfers on the LPGA and currently sits at 2nd on the Rolex Rankings, 3rd in Scoring Average and 4th on the Money List. Suzann has a chance to win the Money List, World Ranking and Scoring Average, but due to the points system for Player of the Year, Suzann will not be able to win that award.
In the 55th position is Amanda Blumenherst, who hit her stride in Late October/Early November and will look to continue her ways this week. While she is 4th in the Rolex Rookie of the Year race, the best she can finish is 2nd. However, we should expect great things from Amanda, as she’s only a rookie and has done well to be in 55th up to this point.
Sitting at 9th on the money list is Michelle Wie, with 1 win and 5 Top 10’s, has withdrawn from the event, due to her back injury that caused her to withdraw from the last LPGA event.
Best of luck to Suzann and Amanda as they look to survive the dreaded one-two cut! It should be an exciting finish with so much on the line. We also hope Michelle a quick and full recovery!
