Here’s a juicy morsel;
Jim Furyk won in 2010 (missed the cut in 2009)
Brian Gay won in 2009 (missed the cut in 2008)
Both had Top 10’s before missing the cut. Before that, Boo Weekley won in 2008 and 2007.

Cink had the lead after Round 1 in the Texas Open last week, then put up some High 70’s. Cink’s record here is top notch and he loves this course. Won in 2000 and 2004. T7 in ’08 and T14 last year. Cink’s gotta break through sometime, right?
Leonard was the Top Nike athlete last week with a T30 at the Texas Open. He comes to Hilton Head with a win here in 2002 and two recent Top 25’s in ’08 and ’07. However, winners at this event have gone low..and Justin has only broken 70 twice in his last 23 rounds..
G’Lover was my Nike pick last year, as he had a T16 in ’04, T12 in ’06, T7 in ’08, T26 in ’09, but missed the cut last year. This year, Lucas is coming off of 2 missed cuts. Look at Lucas’ record this year; T51, T29, T20, CUT, CUT (T50), so we should expect something in the 20’s, no?
Ames averages the best finish here of all of the swooshers. In 7 appearances, Ames has 5 Top 25’s and 2 Top 10’s, 0 missed cuts. T14 last year. This could be big for the Canuck!
other Nike athletes to choose from :: Francesco Molinari (first time here), Kevin Kisner, Carl Pettersson
Charles Howell III
recent finishes – T8 Texas Open, T19 Shell Houston, T39 API, MC Transitions, T10 Honda, T13 Mayakoba
Howell stays on the Hot List this week. Howell also has 4 strong appearances at Harbor Town (T22 last year, T37 in ’09, T12 in ’09 and T19 in ’02). Hot boy.
recent finishes – T5 Texas Open, CUT at Houston, T9 API, T14 Puerto Rico
I won’t discount his CUT at Houston. 3 Top 25’s in your last 4 and 2 Top 10’s is good enough for me. Also had a T22 last year, T37 in ’09, T12 in ’08. He could win, folks.
recent finishes – T4 Masters, T6 WGC Caddy, T10 Honda Classic, 1st Match Play
HOT + HISTORY. Someone tell me how Luke Donald doesn’t win this week? He could go in the History section too (3rd in ’10, 2nd in ’09).
recent finishes – T27 Masters, T8 at Houston, 5th WGC Caddy, T17 Honda, 3rd Match Play
Kuchar and Donald are always hot. T14 here last year, T7 in ’08, T10 in ’05. Kuchar/Donald putt-off showdown.
best finishes – 1st in ’08, 1st in ’07, 12th in ’10, 13th in ‘09
4 appearances, averaging 7th place. Wowee. Coming off of a T60 at the Houston Open.
best finishes – 1st in ’10, 2nd in ’06, 2nd in ’05, 4th in ‘08
Jim should get on track here. Furyk is playing better than people think. 3 straight Top 25’s.
best finishes – 1st in ’06, 2nd in ’08, 10th in ’07, T21 in ’09, T22 in ‘10
5 appearances, 5 Top 25’s, averaging 11th place here. Playing great this year with a win and a T4 at the Houston Open.
Bo Van Pelt
best finishes – 3rd in ’10, T10 in ’07, T13 in ‘09
I wanted to forget that BVP was in contention at the Masters. However, he was and then he had a T59 at the Texas Open. His record is good and he’s playing well.
Alan :: Jason Day, Ricky Barnes, Graeme McDowell and Stewart Cink
Bob :: Brant Snedeker, Luke Donald, Rickie Fowler and Justin Leonard
Damian :: Matt Kuchar, Luke Donald, Spencer Levin and Francesco Molinari
I could have left my 3 non-Nike picks from last week (Gay, Levin, Jacobson). Gay has won here and is in the Top 5 in scoring. Levin has 2 appearances here with a pair of Top 15’s and I already spoke about Freddy J.
Honestly, I think this is the hardest week to pick yet. Yes, Donald, Kuchar and Furyk are money. However, I would swap Steve Marino, Jason Day, Rickie Fowler, Bo Van Pelt, Ernie Els, Camilo Villegas, Aaron Baddeley, Brian Gay or Spencer Levin in there too.
I think the most popular Fantasy Four will be :: Matt Kuchar, Luke Donald, Jim Furyk and Stewart Cink
The Nike pick is a toss-up. Glover/Cink/Ames all look good here but Francesco is probably playing the best but has never played this event.
Other big names in the field :: I think I’ve listed them all earlier in the post.
