Some call it a 5th major, I call it “filling the world class golf void in May.” I can’t call it a 5th major when McIlroy and Westwood aren’t playing. However, we have plenty of Nike Golf athletes in the field this week at TPC Sawgrass and they all have a chance to win.
The athletes competing from the Nike Golf Staff are as follows;
- Stephen Ames
- Paul Casey
- Stewart Cink
- Lucas Glover
- Anthony Kim
- Justin Leonard
- Francesco Molinari
- Carl Pettersson
- Charl Schwartzel
- Jhonattan Vegas
- Tiger Woods
Below are the tee times for each of the 11 Nike athletes in the field this week (would have been 12, but Jamie Lovemark is injured);
Tee 10 – 7:57 am – Stenson, Henrik | Love III, Davis | Leonard, Justin
Leonard is a former champ here, winning in 1998. Lately, he’s only made 1 cut in his past 5 events. He’s in a group of former winners though, so maybe it can help.
Tee 1 – 8:08 am – Kuchar, Matt | Kaymer, Martin | Woods, Tiger
Some could say this is a tough group for Tiger, but he loves the competition. Kuchar and Kaymer were arguably the two best golfers on the planet last season and Tiger should be glad to be playing with them. I find the 10 year anniversary kind of special.
Tee 1 – 8:18 am – Glover, Lucas | Els, Ernie | Casey, Paul
I picked Casey last year and he missed the cut. Lucas Glover finished 3rd last year. Lucas won last week. He has high expectations and I think he’ll do well. Casey is coming off of a missed cut at the Masters, but he should rebound well as he’s a gamer that’s having a less than stellar year. He needs to bounce back eventually.
Tee 1 – 8:39 am – Pettersson, Carl | Johnson, Zach | Rollins, John
CPetts is playing good golf. He’s made 3 straight cut’s T30, T40 and T9 and seems to be on a good streak. WD from his most recent Players (’09) after a 2nd round 67. T51 in ’08. T28 in ’07. T8 in ’06. Solid record, Carl!
Tee 10 – 8:50 am – Ames, Stephen | Van Pelt, Bo | Allenby, Robert
Ames has a very good record here. Runner up in ’02, winner in ’06. 5th in ’08. Seems to do well in even number years.
Tee 1 – 2:00 pm – Vegas, Jhonattan | Holmes, J.B. | Molinari, Francesco
Vegas is a Players rookies, while Francesco had a solo 9th in his debut this year. Vegas has had a downward slide recently, but could rebound here if he’s accurate. I’m looking for a duplicate performance from Francesco. I’m not sure if Vegas and Molinari are friends, since I think they have have trouble understanding one another’s English, but it could be fun!
Tee 10 – 12:57 pm – Day, Jason | Kim, Anthony | Toms, David
I’m falling in love with AK more and more every minute. Maybe because it’s that underdog status and maybe because I’ve always loved his confidence.
Tee 10 – 1:28 pm – Mahan, Hunter | Stricker, Steve | Schwartzel, Charl
Charl is actually headlining this group, but I actually see all of these guys in the Top 10 on Sunday. Sure, he missed the cut here last year, but he’s playing well and is known for being streaky-hot.
Tee 10 – 1:49 pm – Steele, Brendan | Cink, Stewart | Perry, Kenny
Cink has been quietly having a great year. He had his first Top 10 of the season, but in 11 events, only has 2 missed cuts and 7 Top 30’s. I find it strange that he’s never won a Players Championship. Maybe Lucas’ win last week will inspire him. Cut last year, MDF in ’09, T21 in ’08, T3 in ’07. I can see him winning!
