Before Charl Schwartzel won the Masters, he was ranked 29th in the world. After the Masters, he was ranked 11th. G’Lover won the US Open being ranked 71st in the world. After his win he was 19th.Cink from went 23rd to 9th after his Open win.
Let’s hope there’s another big jump this week.
Paul Casey – 10th
Casey has been somewhat struggling at the WGC and PGA Tour events this year. Yes, he has a win on the European Tour, but that’s about it. He’s coming off of a T24 at the BMW PGA, but he should have a good chance to contend this week as he’s obviously one of the top golfers in the world. Although, no one seems to be talking about him this week.
Charl Schwartzel – 11th
Schwartzel is excited this week and I think he has a really good chance to contend this week. Charl is serious. He’s won 4 events in the past two years and has Top 30’s in the last 5 majors. Serious game.
Francesco Molinari – 22nd
Molinari seems to be a darkhorse pick and the stars seem to be aligning for him. I think he’ll be very comfortable playing with his brother and countryman. Once he’s comfortable, he can bring out his world-class skill that won him the WGC HSBC Champions over Lee Westwood (2nd) and Luke Donald (3rd).
Lucas Glover – 58th
I like Glover this week because of his history at US Opens and his history at Congressional (T12 in ’07, T5 in ’09 at the AT&T National). He already has a win on Tour this year, so he should be ready to go this week.
Anthony Kim – 65th
Of course, AK is my ultimate sleeper this week. His vegas odds of winning are 126:1. This is all I have to say; Record at Congressional (AT&T National) – 3rd in ’09, 1st in ’08, T25 in ’07. Record at US Opens – T16 in ’09, T26 in ’08, T21 in ’07. AK turns 26 on Sunday. Get a huge win, brother.
Stewart Cink – 71st
Cink has been so consistent this year that I’m surprised his world ranking is so low. He’s made 12 of his last 13 cuts, averaging 20th place over his last 5 starts. Cink finished T13 here in ’97 and was T2 after the 2nd round.
Let’s hope one of these athletes comes home with a win from Congressional. It would be a great story for any of these athletes.
