The defending Masters champion, Charl Schwartzel, finished the 2011 Masters with four straight birdies. He’s come in somewhat under the radar this week, with Westwood, Donald and Tiger stealing most of the headlines. However, he has played amazingly well at each of the majors in the past year. He’s won 4 tournaments in the past 2 years and not many golfers can say that on any tour.
Here’s what Charl had to say about the U.S Open this week;
For me the U.S. Open was probably the one that I actually thought that I would win first. I always thought it’s the one I felt the most comfortable with…Coming to this golf course this week, it’s another one that feels good to me. It’s all in front of me, and I’m actually quite excited about this week.
I think Charl is a serious contender this week. Last year after winning the Masters, Phil finished T4 at the US Open. It’s a very rare occurence that a Masters winner misses the cut at the U.S. Open. However, the two Masters winners that follow up with a Top 10 at the US Open are Tiger and Phil. Charl Schwartzel has 5 straight Top 30’s in Majors.. I expect that streak to continue. Let’s hope Charl can join that company.
