What a great Open Champion in Darren Clarke. While Phil, DJ, AK, Bjorn and Glover tried to hold on, the steady and reliable Darren Clarke came away with the win.
It was a very impressive weekend for the Swoosh, with Glover tied for 1st after round 2 and with Dyson in the hunt on the first two rounds too. Not to mention AK being in contention in Rounds 3 and 4. Charl Schwartzel has also kept up his major dominance this year, while the likes of Donald and Westwood have struggled.
Here’s a look at the final standings for each of the Nike athletes at The Open Championship, a short blurb on each and their OWGR before and after The Open;
T5 :: Anthony Kim
AK had a wonderful weekend. His final 27 holes, he went -3. The highlight for me was Round 3. He shot a 38 on the front 9, and followed it up with a 32 on the back 9 to end the round at even par. So clutch. He now has great momentum heading into the Canadian Open where he as a great track record
Current Ranking – 58 (+15)
T9 :: Simon Dyson
What a great finish for Simon. Dyson started early in Round 1 and posted a strong 2-under mark, finished T8 at the end of the tournament. He followed up his 68 with a 72 72 70, to finish in 9th. He’s been hot lately and it was a great finish on his home soil.
Current Ranking – 66 (+8)
T12 :: Lucas Glover
G’Lover was tied with Darren Clarke for the 2nd round lead. However, Glover finished the weekend witha 73-74 slipping 11 spots on Saturday and Sunday. However, it’s Lucas’ best finish in a Major since his great 2009 (win US Open, T5 PGA).
Current Ranking – 55 (+4)
T16 :: Charl Schwartzel
I can’t say enough about this guy. 1st at the Maser, T9 US Open and a T16 here. No one this year has that kind of record at the majors. Charl has Top 30’s in 7 straight majors. Enough said.
Current Ranking – 12 (-1)
T30 :: Stewart Cink
Cink would have been right in the mix if it weren’t for a 3rd round 77. Unfortunately he was in the worst of the weather, but managed to put up 70-71-71 in the other three round. Good finish for Cink, who has been a Top 30 machine this year.
Current Rank – 80 (-1)
T54 :: Paul Casey
I know PC has a win this year, but he’s still not having a great year. Casey did well to make the cut with a 2nd round 69, but the 3rd round weather got to him as he fired at 78. However, he bounced back in Round 4 with a 72.
Current Rank – 15 (-1)
CUT :: Justin Leonard
I thought Justin was going to contend after he started -3 thru 3 in Round 1. However, that didn’t last very long. While he ended even par through round 1, he went +4 on his next 18 and JUST missed the cut. However, that was the best golf we’ve seen from him so far this year.
Current Rank – 210 (-3)
CUT :: Francesco Molinari
Francesco shot 73-75 to miss the cut. He hasn’t made a cut in a major in 2011, and has only made 2 cuts in the past 7. He shows up for the WGC events, but can’t seem to put it together for the majors.
Current Rank – 23 (-1)
CUT :: Scott Jamieson
The hottest Nike athletes heading into this week was met with a major test of golf this week. Jamieson shot 75-75 in his first major.
Current Rank – 164 (-8)
