Ok, ok, so the topic is a little misleading. But for all you Nike superfans out there (like me), you will appreciate where I’m coming from. You see it was announced today that Nike is ready to unveil its Air Mag shoe much sooner than the original expected date which was sometime in 2015. Now what is the Air Mag? Here’s a little background:
Back in 2007, the sneakerheads assembled to put on a grassroots movement to convince Nike to make a functional version of the Nikes that Marty McFly wore in Back to the Future II. In fact, one sneakerhead even went as far as making his own. Then last year, Nike filed a patent with for a self-lacing system with the USPTO and it sure didn’t look like a stunt. The Nike McFly project was expected to be completed in 2015, but now it looks like we’ll see them a lot sooner.
Rumor has it that the Nike Air Mag will be unveiled at a special invite only event. According to geek.com, several not-so-subtle hints are included in the goodie box received by the lucky invitees, including a bottle of Throwback Pepsi, a pair of wraparound shades just like those worn by Doc Brown, some nostalgia-inspiring candy, and the invite itself.
What does this mean for golf shoes? Well we’ve seen Air Max, Flywire, and Hyperfuse technologies make their way into the golf line. Maybe self-lacing technology will make it too. Hey, a golfing geek can hope right?
