It was a stellar Sunday for Nike Golf, as Team Nike notched three wins on the day. Nike Athlete Suzanne Pettersen started the victory march with her win at the Mission Hills World Ladies Championship, where she carded a bogey-free final round 66 to overtake Inbee Park for a 1-stroke victory. It was her 16th worldwide win, and her sixth on the Ladies European Tour.
Nike Athlete Scott Brown kept the party going with his victory at the Puerto Rico Open, the PGA Tour’s opposite field event to the WGC Cadillac Championship. Brown shot a final round 70 that ended up being enough for the win. He birdied the final hole, while leader Fabian Gomez bogeyed for a two-shot swing that gave Brown the W.
And the eyes of the golf world were on Tiger Woods to see if he could bring home a win at the WGC Cadillac Championship at Doral. Woods entered the final round with a four shot lead, and ended up winning by two shots over his good friend Steve Stricker (who gave Tiger a putting lesson earlier in the week). Tiger’s birdie fest (27 on the week) resulted in his second win of 2013 and his 76th PGA Tour title. It was also his 17th World Golf Championship title and seventh WGC Cadillac Championship title.
Also of note was world #1 Rory McIlroy’s final round 65, where he carded 5 birdies and an eagle on his way to a T8 finish. Rory entered the week struggling with his game, but after rounds of 72, 69 and 71, Rory seemed to hit is stride in round 4, swinging with confidence and seemingly leaving his swing issues behind him.
With three wins this weekend, and Rory getting his game back in gear, the 2013 season seems to be shaping up to be a good one for Team Nike. We’ll be keeping our eyes on the Nike Athletes on the PGA and European Tours in the next few weeks as they get ready for the first major of the year — yes, Masters week is only four short weeks away. Let the quest for the green jacket begin.
