The early conditions on Monday were rainy! Hints of Bethpage, from the tweets I was seeing. I think we all know what to expect here. This is a US Open, where the rough is thick and the scoring is hard to come by.
Here are your last 5 US Open Champions:
2012 – Webb Simpson
2011 – Rory McIlroy
2010 – Graeme McDowell
2009 – Lucas Glover
2008 – Tiger Woods
This is Event 2/4 in Month 6, Event 2/16 in our Second Half and Event 23 Overall.

11 Nike Athletes in the field this week. That leaves a lot of choice! The full list: Paul Casey, Kevin Chappell, Russ Henley, Rory McIlroy, Francesco Molinari, Thorbjorn Olesen, Carl Pettersson, Charl Schwartzel, Kyle Stanley, Nick Watney and Tiger Woods.
Fun fact of the week, Kevin Chappell had Top 10’s at the 2011 and 2012 US Open. Tiger, Rory or Charl can’t say that. Chappell is PRIMED after a 2nd place at Memorial. Super sleeper this week, folks.
Rory has been in 4 US Open’s. 2009 = 10th. 2010 = cut. 2011 = win. 2012 = cut. So he does good on odd years? Rory has had a tough year. He finished 57th at Memorial and was cut at the BMW PGA before that. He had Top 10s at the Players and Wells Fargo before that. Somehow, he’s a sleeper this week, but let’s not forget he’s still 2nd best in the world.
This kid is magic. He’s been in 4 majors in his life. He missed the cut at his first one in 2011, but then he finished T9 at the 2012 Open, T27 at the 2012 PGA and then finished T6 at the Masters this year. Since the Masters, he’s missed the cut at his last 3 stroke play events.
Charl has made the cut at the last 3 US Opens, finishing 16th, 9th and 38th. In the last 14 majors, he’s made the cut in 13 of them, with 8 Top 25s. Charl is coming off of an 8th place finish at Memorial.
Watney has been consistent in the majors, finishing T12, T32, T13, T21 and T23 in 5 of his last 6 majors. He really just needs to break through. He finished T21 at the 2012 US Open and is coming off of 2 straight missed cuts, but a T10 and T15 at the Wells Fargo and Zurich Classic before that.
Tiger has won 3 US Opens. He’s just hungry for a major. I don’t need to say much here. He finished T4 at the Masters again this year, just like in 2010 and 2011. In 2010 he followed up his T4 at the Masters with a T4 at the US Open. He’ll be in the Top 10 at least. Ignore the 65th at the Memorial.

Fowler went 4-0-0 at the 2009 Walker Cup on this course. Tell me he’s not excited this week. He has made the cut at 6 of the last 7 majors with one Top 10. Coming off of a 37th at Memorial.

He loves this event. He’s coming off of a missed cut at the BMW PGA, but won the Volvo Match Play and won the RBC Heritage since the Masters.

Best finishes at this event – 10th in ’12, 3rd in ’11, 16th in ’10
WD at Memorial, but 3 straight Top 10’s before that: 9th BMW PGA, 8th Players, 4th Wells Fargo
Defending Champion – Webb Simpson
Alan :: Ian Poulter, Jason Day, Adam Scott, Tiger Woods
Bob :: Angel Cabrera, Zach Johnson, Adam Scott, Tiger Woods
Damian :: Matt Kuchar, Rickie Fowler, Charl Schwartzel and Tiger Woods
I want to pick Luke Donald for some reason or Sergio. Those would be my alternates. Schwartzel is too good and has major game, but I think Luke D and Sergio do as well. Westwood would be my 7th. I’m obviously sympathetic to dudes who haven’t won a major yet.
