Over the summer, I was at The Barclays in Jersey City, NJ where I saw Rory McIlroy wear an awesome striped shirt that I had not seen before.
In my head I thought, “That’s the perfect Ryder Cup/Presidents Cup shirt for the U.S.” So when I got home, I texted Matt at GC Pickers and asked what shirt it was, and if he would be carrying it. In short order, Matt responded that it was the Stripe Pocket Polo from the Sport Collection, and in fact he already had an order on the way and that it came in a variety of colors.
Well once the shirts came in, I ordered one for myself and I couldn’t be happier.
- It’s not purple. The official colors listed are: Sail / Armory Navy / Gamma Orange. It’s more of a lighter navy and the single stripe on the bottom is more of a red color.
- It’s a slim fit shirt. This shirt will be tighter around the body and has shorter sleeves and higher arm holes. If you’ve got a big chest, it will fit tight and trust me you wont want to put anything in that pocket.
- It’s 100% DRI-Fit polyester, which is different than previous Sport collection shirts that were a blend of cotton/poly. With this shirt you get that same “tech” feel that the Tour Collection has
- It’s not the longest shirt. But this can be a good thing. Consider that this shirt might come untucked here and there.
What to wear it with:
My recommended pairing are with the modern tech pant in Squadron Blue (Sometimes labeled as Brave Blue), as Rory demonstrated at The Barclays, or in Dark Grey. In terms of shorts, I think it could be pulled off with white shorts as well, but with a grey belt – or something understated to break up the barrage of white. If you want to get real patriotic then try it with the modern tech pant in Gamma Orange.
More on the fit:
Can you swing a golf club in this shirt? Yes. Does it fit tighter than most golf shirts? Yes. My point is that this shirt is more about style and fit, but it still packs a punch with the inclusion of 100% Dri-Fit. If you want to get noticed, I suppose this shirt would be for you. My suggestion to anyone interested in the Sport Collection is to try a shirt on first. While it may be difficult to find the Sport Collection garments in your local golf store (I know it is difficult for me and I live/work by NYC), it will be helpful to know if you like and more importantly, can play, in the fit of this shirt.
Where to get it:
On the Nike store, its currently available in one color (Armory Navy / Fusion Pink), and it is currently available at a host of online retailers. I personally like to get my shirts from Golf Coast Pickers because of the good service I’ve received and the fast shipping. They also have all four colors.
