Last July, Nike Golf sent out their “Don’t Sleep On Summer” promotion, and I was lucky enough to be included in the mailing. Included in the promotion was a pair of one of Nike Golf’s newest shoe offerings, the Lunar Waverly. Since receiving the shoes I’ve had the chance to wear them several times at the range and on the course, and I share my thoughts about the shoe with you here.
My first impression of the Lunar Waverly was that of a shoe with a vintage look but with modern technology built in. The visual design is reminiscent of Nike’s early sneaker designs, but the addition of Lunarlon cushioning and the waffle sole for traction brings it into the realm of modern golf footwear. The cork insole is an interesting addition, and Nike’s Dynamic Fit system ensures stability. The Lunar Waverly is a casual golf shoe design that you can wear on and off the course, and performs on the course as well as any of Nike Golf’s previous footwear offerings.
The Lunar Waverly has a distinct visual design, a throwback to early Nike shoe models. The black leather upper is contrasted by a dark gray swoosh and a black suede accent just above the outsole. The white Lunarlon foam midsole and volt colored waffle lug sole give the shoe a modern look. The shoe comes with two sets of laces — black and volt — and there is a nice volt detail on the eyelets. The cork insole is very unique, very cool. This shoe design is casual with an overall retro look, but with contemporary design touches.
Beneath the throwback appearance, the Lunar Waverly is packed with technology. The full-length Lunarlon cushioning gives the shoe a very comfortable ride. The lugs on the waffle sole are different sizes and heights, to maximize traction during the swing. As a side note, the lugs on the Lunar Swingtip (a shoe I still love and wear often) are flush with the edges of the outsole, and they give plenty of traction — some of the lugs on the Lunar Waverly extend below the sidewalls, and they give even more traction, while still allowing you to comfortably wear the shoe off the course. The Dynamic Fit System helps the shoe to hug your foot when you lace it up, giving it great stability during the swing. And finally, the cork insole is cool both in looks and in performance — it kept my feet comfortable, cool and dry during my testing. You can read more about the technology designed into the Lunar Waverly in Nike Golf’s press release.
The Lunar Waverly is extremely comfortable. The leather upper is soft, supple and very flexible. The Lunarlon cushioning in combination with the even lug pattern across the sole feels great when walking on hard surfaces, and even better when walking on grass. The shoe breathes well, and my feet never feel like they’re getting too hot. And the cork insole adds even more comfort, a great idea for a material to use in this part of the shoe. Overall the Lunar Waverly gets very high marks regarding comfort.
The fit of the Lunar Waverly was true to size for me, with ample room across the forefoot (a feature I look for in a golf shoe, previously seen in the FI Impact). The Dynamic Fit System ensured a snug fit when laced up without feeling tight. However, as always I recommend that you try these on before buying to make sure the size is right for you.
The Lunar Waverly performed great on the course for me. It was not only super-comfortable, but very stable as well. Traction is excellent, especially for a shoe with the lugs integrated into the sole — the waffle sole has never slipped once during the swing. The Dynamic Fit System gives great stability, the shoe cradles my foot and I feel like I’m really connected to the ground when I’m playing.
The Lunar Waverly is now one of my favorite shoes from Nike Golf. It’s retro visual design combined with modern technology results in a shoe that looks amazing and performs even better. It’s extremely comfortable, and can be worn on and off the course. If you’re looking for a great-looking, comfortable casual golf shoe for 2015, I recommend you check out the Lunar Waverly.
