Weekend Wrapup :: Solheim Cup, FedEx Cup and other Nike athletes

It was a big weekend for the world of golf. There was a HUGE showdown between Michelle Wie and Suzann Pettersen at the Solheim Cup, while the FedEx Cup wrapped up in dramatic fashion (sadly, no Nike athletes were involved).

Weekend Wrap-up and FedEx Cup Update :: 9.06

What a fun weekend in golf! The European tour came up big, while there was lots of drama at TPC Boston as another cut was made in the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

  • Anthony Kim and Stewart Cink failed to make the cut at the Deutsche Bank Championship, thus eliminating them from the FedEx Cup playoffs. If AK just made the cut, I think he would have been okay, as he was 66th heading into the event. For Cink, he was 94th heading into the event.
  • Charl Schwartzel gave Nike Golf some hope after being tied for the lead after a pair of 66′s heading into Sunday. However, he still got a Top 25.
  • Lucas Glover probably had the most consistent weekend of anyone; 69-69-69-70 locked up his T21 at the Deutsche Bank. Great bounce back after missing the cut at the Barclays.
  • Jhonattan Vegas has made 9 straight cuts. He should be too upset with his T42 at TPC Boston, since he did play quite well.
  • Not much new for Nike Golf on the European tour. Kaymer and McIlroy contended, Bjorn picked up his 2nd straight win and Dyson and Francesco picked up good Top 25s.
  • Big finishes on the Nationwide Tour, as Scott Brown and Kevin Kisner picked up Top 25s. While Kisner was in The Top 25 last year, Scott Brown should do the same as he is currently 12th on the Nationwide Money List.
  • Meanwhile, Dustin Garza has played in 17 Nationwide events; 15 Missed Cuts, 1 WD and 1 DQ.

Here’s where the Nike Golf PGA Athletes sit in the FedEx Cup rankings;

Charl Schwartzel (27)
Lucas Glover (45)
Jhonattan Vegas (50)
Carl Pettersson (52)

Weekend Wrapup :: 8.01

Pretty huge weekend for Nike Golf, I would say. On Saturday, AK and Dyson were both in the lead of their respective tournaments. It was a bit of a no-contest in terms of the LPGA and Senior’s majors, but still a fun weekend overall.

Weekend Wrap-up :: 7.24

It was a pretty big weekend for golf in general.

  • AK (Anthony Kim) had high hopes in Canada coming off of a great Open finish, but followed up his 69 with an 81. AK was also DQ’d for signing an incorrect scorecard. Try googling “Anthony Kim DQ Canadian Open” – hopefully it gets you here. That’s my joke for the day.
  • Charl Schwartzel is on a tear. He picked up his 9th Top 10 of the year. He’s played 18 events and has 2 finishes outside of the Top 30.
  • Suzann Pettersen had an emotional weekend after the attacks in Norway. However, she still dominated with a 69-68 on the weekend for a great Top 10 at the “soon to be” 5th LPGA Major (Evian Masters).
  • Scott Jamieson bounced back from his Open Championship missed cut, with a T13. That’s 3 Top 25s and 2 Top 10s in his last 5 starts.
  • Pablo Martin and Richard Finch picked up Top 10s at the same event, Nordea Masters.
  • John Cook and Bob Tway picked up some decent finishes at the Senior Open Championship. They finished 11th and T12.
  • Tommy Fleetwood also picked up a Top 10 on the European Challenge Tour. He’s sitting at 29th on the Challenge Tour Rankings…just outside the Top 25 to advance to the European Tour.

Weekend Wrap-up :: 7.11

Big week leading up to the Open Championship. Scott Jamieson was in contention down to the wire at the Scottish Open.

  • Vegas had another up and down week on the PGA Tour. However, he’s shown progress in the past 2 events, after posting lackluster results following his win. His first two rounds were  68 64, but finished with  75-75 on the weekend.
  • With AK and Dyson getting into The Open Championship through other players withdrawals, Scott Jamieson birdied the 53rd and 54th holes of the Scottish Open to make it in. Good for Scotty J, as he’s had 2 Top 3 finishes in his past 3 events. I’m very glad he made it to Royal St. George’s.
  • Michelle Wie made the cut at the US Open with a birdie on her final hole of the 2nd round. Sadly, Amanda Blumenherst went +3 on her final 4 holes and missed the cut by 1 stroke.
  • Meanwhile, Suzann picks up another quality finish in a major, with her T15. She finished T2 last year, T6 in ’09 and T13 in ’08. She does very well at the US Open.
  • Also, Kevin Tway, son of Nike Staffer, Bob Tway, missed the cut at the John Deere Classic.

Weekend Wrap-up :: 7.04

Busy week for the Nike Golf staff this weekend, as they almost put two wins on the board.

  • John Cook picks up his 3rd win of the season. However, he’s only 4th in the Charles Schwab Cup standings..most likely because his only Top 10′s are wins.
  • James Morrison was tied for the lead after the 3rd round of the Alstom Open de France. Good for him, as he was on a streak of 4 straight missed cuts.
  • Carl Pettersson has been the Top Nike athlete in 3 of the past 4 PGA Tour events. He’s doing great and having a really consistent year. He’s 59th in the FedEx Up standings.
  • Carly Booth JUST missed the cut this year. She’s not having a great year with a lot of missed cuts. However, she is so close to making all of these cuts. Tough go for the young lass.

Weekend Wrap-up :: 6.26

Lots of action for the Nike Golf athletes this week. I must apologize that we didn’t give a lot of love to the LPGA’s 2nd major of the year. Especially since Suzann shows up big time at majors. That’s where we start;

  • Suzann Pettersen is a beast. She picks up another Top 10 in a Major. In her last 5 majors, she has 5 Top 20′s and is averaging 8.5th place. She’s like Lee Westwood. Except, she won the LPGA Championship in 2007.
  • Jhonattan Vegas had his best outing in awhile this weekend. He shot a 66 on Sunday and jumped 19 spots to finish T33. He’s sitting at 24th in the FedEx Cup standings.
  • Is it bad that I’m happy that AK shot -2 and missed the cut? Progress, AK. Progress.
  • Scott Jamieson is a winner. He picked up his 4th Top 10 of the year. He’s also sitting in 36th in the Race to Dubai rankings. Not too shabby.

Nike Golf Athletes Weekend Wrap-up :: 6.20

There was some other golf being played this weekend, believe it or not.

  • You can check out my full US Open recap here, but Charl Schwartzel broke into the Top 10 of the World Golf Rankings after his T9 at the US Open.
  • Scott Brown picked up his 2nd consecutive Top 3 finish. That’s 3 so far this year. Scott jumped from 16th to 9th on the Nationwide Tour Money List.
  • Kristie Smith continues to dominate the LET. She finished 2nd at the Swiss Open. She is now 5th on the LET Money List.
  • I was hopeful for Top 10′s on each tour, but no one made the cut on the European Tour. Tommy Fleetwood would have been the best bet, but looks like he may be injured.
