The BMW Championship gets underway tomorrow at Cog Hill, the field is down to 70 and the race is on for the FedEx Cup trophy and the $10 million dollar winner’s check. A number of players still have a shot at winning the title, and here the NG Nation team gives you their picks for the winner and the highest finishing Nike Golf athlete:

DAMIAN DANIELS

Luke Donald (currently 5th)
I feel as though everyone forgot about Luke. I, however, did not forget about Luke’s insane streak where he went 3-26-2-1-3-47-11-11 on the European and PGA Tours leading up to the WGC Bridgestone. Now he’s gone 15th then T2 in the PGA Tour Playoffs so far. He also has an incredible record at Cog Hill, which I covered in my Fantasy Four article. The only person with a better record than Donald this year is Matt Kuchar, but I would give the edge to Donald for playing back and forth overseas. I think he’ll win at Cog Hill and get a much deserved win on the PGA Tour and cement himself as the best golfer this year.

Tiger Woods (currently 51st)
I’m not even sure if Tiger can mathematically win the FedEx Cup is he finishes first at Cog Hill and East Lake. Is it possible to go T12, T11, 1st and 1st and not win the Cup if you start in the 100′s? Tiger has been great in the last two events and should be right behind Donald and Kuchar to win the Playoffs in my mind. The BMW Championship is Tiger’s best shot at a victory this year, coming off two good performances and three rounds in the 60′s. He should also be full of confidence at Cog Hill, where he has 4 wins. I think Tiger will crack the Top 5 overall when it’s all said and done.

ALAN NUMSUWAN

Steve Stricker (currently 3rd)
I still don’t think Stricker gets the recognition he deserves. Maybe it’s because he’s quiet or that his game is led by his precision putting instead of the long ball, but Stricker followed up his monster 2009 year with an impressive 2010. This year he’s carded two wins and eight top 10s, and in the playoffs he has so far recorded a T3 at The Barclays, and a 9th place finish at the Deutsche Bank Championship. If he can win in either of the last two tournaments I am pretty sure that is a wrap.

Paul Casey (currently 21st)
Well, we’ve seen Charley Hoffman move from 59th to 2nd after winning a playoff tournament so while that seemingly gives anyone a chance at the title, I’m going with PC as my Nike pick. I think it can go either way for Casey – he could explode to the top or implode for the rest of the playoffs. I mean, after learning of his Ryder Cup snub, he went from a T12 at the Barclays, to a T25 at the DB Championship. Either he will prove that Monty picked the wrong guy or he’ll just keep trucking along til the end of the season. I think that PC can win one of these tournaments – he bombs the ball and has a brilliant short game so like anyone else, all he needs is one win.

BOB DIERCKSMEIER

Matt Kuchar (currently 1st)
After a lackluster weekend performance at the Deutsche Bank last weekend I look for Kuchar to rebound this week at Cog Hill. He’s played too well all year long to slip far from the top spot if at all, he’s already guaranteed a top 5 spot going into The Tour Championship and with a win there he’ll be the FedEx Cup champion. Plus returning to East Lake in Atlanta, the home of his alma mater Georgia Tech, should provide him extra incentive to win the Playoffs outright in front of his hometown fans.

Stewart Cink (currently 35th)
I’m not sure what the mathematical chances are for each Nike athlete still in the playoffs (Ames, Casey, Cink, Kim, Leonard, Pettersson and Woods) to actually win the FedEx Cup, but I’m pretty sure they all need a high finish or a win at Cog Hill to have a real chance. So I’m going with Stewart Cink, also a Georgia Tech alum — he needs to finish 11th or better at Cog Hill to get into The Tour Championship, and I’m betting on his steady play of late including top 20 finishes in his last four events. I look for him to be motivated by his Ryder Cup selection and the chance to win the FedEx Cup in front of his hometown Atlanta fans.

Well there you have it, we’ll have to see who ends up being the closest after the Tour Championship, and if anyone can match Alan’s perfect record for the U.S. Ryder Cup Captain’s picks.

This feels like the 10th BMW Championship of this year thanks to all the European Tour events. How can BMW sponsor all these events worldwide, yet the PGA Tour is struggling to get sponsors? Anyway, they don’t have to worry about FedEx! This week we head to Cog Hill-Dubsbread where the history is rich! The course underwent a redesign in 2008, so we’ll ignore those stats and if you rely on history, I would focus on last year more heavily than others.

The exciting news this week is that there’s no cut! Everyone has a chance, so maybe we’ll see some McIlroy Magic on Sunday. Also, Furyk, Vijay and Stricker always seem to show up in the History section, and deservedly so, they’ve been money in the playoffs and step up to the big show!

This is Event 21 of the season and the second-last event of The Playoffs for the NG Nation Fantasy Four and it’s probably too late to join For a refresher on the rules, hit the link — Contest Guidelines and leave your Fantasy Four below.

NIKE GOLF: Four to Watch

Paul Casey (21)
Casey is a hot one and has been the hot Swoosher, with 4 straight Top 25′s, including two T12′s. However, Casey and Cog Hill don’t have much history, but let’s all we see Casey in the Playoffs for years to come. However, Cink, Petts and Tiger all have good cases going into this week, so I expect some more variation in the Nike department.

Anthony Kim (34)
AK has essentially missed the cut in every event since he’s come back. His best round was his opening 68 last week and if there’s a week to pick him, it’s this week. AK will look to prove himself worthy of a Ryder Cup pick along with making the Tour Championship. On the other hand, he could say “hey, let’s just get healthy for next year…” Anthony had a T23 here last year.

Stewart Cink (35)
Cink also has 4 straight Top 25′s and is coming off of an excellent Ryder Cup pick. Cink had a T23 here in ’09, T7 in ’07, T4 in ’06..umm, this could be his week.

Carl Pettersson (39)
I should put Tiger here, but I need to show Petts some love. He’s on 3 straight MC’s since the PGA, but his record here is noteworthy. T10 in ’07, T4 i n’06, T7 in ’04. That’s pretty solid. Who knows, the MC’s could be hangover form his win earlier this year.

Other Nike golfers in the field: Tiger Woods – owns the course (51), Stephen Ames – won in ’04 (69), Justin Leonard – no history (59)

THE FIELD: Four Who are Hot

John Senden (38)
Recent starts – 8th at Deutsche Bank, T15 at Barclays
He’s hot in the playoffs and that’s when it counts. T20 here last year

Matt Kuchar (1)
Recent starts –T11 at Deutsche Bank, 1st at Barclays, T10 at PGA, T9 at WGC, T21 at Greenbrier, T4 at Canadian Open, T27 at The Open, T6 at US Open, T8 at Memorial
He doesn’t stop. He had the quietest T11 last week and I don’t think he had any TV coverage. The cup is his to lose as he’s been rock-solid. T10 here last year.

Adam Scott (15)
Recent starts – T27 at The Open, T9 at at WGC-Bridgestone, T39 at PGA, T9 at Barclays, T5 at Deutsche Bank
Mere already knew that his win this year wasn’t a fluke. He’s playing great and the cards are in his favour this week. T21 in ’06, 4th in ’07.

Jason Day (4)
Recent starts – T2 at Deutsche Bank, T5 at Barclays, T10 at PGA, T22 at WGC-Bridgestone
Maybe he’ll get picked this week…he’ll probably finished 1st since he’s so trendy. T59 here last year.

THE FIELD: Four Who Have History

Luke Donald (5)
Best finishes – T10 in ’09, T30 in ’07, T21 in’06, T28 in ’05, T3 in ’04, T13 in ’03
I think everyone forgot he was the hottest player in the world a few months ago. He’s still on his game, but I think people have noticed him less because others have also been playing well.

Jim Furyk (11)
Best finishes – T2 in ’09, T3 in’08, T4 in ’06, 1st in ’05, T7 in ’04, T3 in ’03
Last week was an off week from the DQ the week before. You never have to worry about Furyk and he has bundles of history here.

Vijay Singh (63)
Best finishes – T4 in’06, T13 in ’05, T17 in ’04, 11 in ’03
T11 last week made me look really good. Let’s keep it up, Vij.

Stephen Ames (69)
Best finishes –T15 in ’09, T5 in’08, T38 in ’05, T21 in ’06, T34 in ’05, 1st in ’04

Today U.S. Captain Corey Pavin announced his captain’s picks for the 2010 U.S. Ryder Cup Team, and on his list of four wild card selections were Nike Golf athletes Tiger Woods and Stewart Cink. Woods and Cink will join fellow Nike athlete Francesco Molinari, who made it onto Team Europe on points, at the Ryder Cup matches at Celtic Manor in Wales which are set to begin on October 1st.

Tiger expressed his satisfaction with being selected for the team in this statement on his web site: ”It’s great to be part of this team, and I’m honored to be selected,” Woods said. “I’m looking forward to going to Wales and hopefully bringing the Cup back.” Through his Twitter account, Stewart Cink expressed his excitement about being selected with this simple tweet: “Whoooooooooo!”

Disappointing was the omission of Anthony Kim and Lucas Glover, who were 9th and 10th in Ryder Cup points respectively at the time the captains picks were announced, from the U.S. Team. But Kim’s comeback from thumb surgery and Glover’s inconsistent play of late were contributing factors to their not being selected for the team. Even more surprising and disappointing was European Captain Colin Montgomerie’s choice to leave Ryder Cup veteran and Nike athlete Paul Casey off of Team Europe.

It will surely be an exciting and pressure-packed three days of golf at Celtic Manor, and we can’t wait for the matches to kick off three weeks from Friday. Look for our NG Nation staff picks for the Ryder Cup some time during Ryder Cup week.

Congrats to Nike Golf athletes Tiger Woods and Stewart Cink on their selection for the team and best of luck in Wales in three weeks!

In just a few hours U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Corey Pavin will announce his captain’s picks for the 2010 Ryder Cup, which will beheld at Celtic Manor in Wales later this month. European Captain Colin Montgomerie has already announced his picks, which caused some controversy as he left Ryder Cup veteran and world No. 9 player Paul Casey and fellow Englishman and world No. 22 Justin Rose off the team, instead choosing Irishman Padraig Harrington, Englishman Luke Donald and Italian Edoardo Molinari as his captain’s selections.

We’ll need to see if there are any surprises or controversial picks in tomorrow’s news conference scheduled for 10:30 a.m. EST. As a lead-in to Captain Pavin’s news conference, the NG Nation staff has gotten together to offer their opinions on who he might select as his four captains picks for the 2010 U.S. Team:

DAMIAN DANIELS

The biggest challenge for the US Ryder Cup team will probably be match-ups. Kaymer, Donald, Westwood, Jiminez and F.Molinari are some of the most controlled and accurate players in the world, while McIlroy and Poulter are wildmen who will go all out. I feel that the current US Team is a little boring outside of Mahan. I’m worried about Overton and Bubba and I don’t think DJ can play under that consistent pressure, so I think Team USA needs a little fire and experience with the Captain’s picks. Here we go!

Tiger Woods

It has to be an obvious pick. I really think he’ll be the leader of the US team. This is Tiger’s chance to win everyone back. The fans, the media and his fellow tour pros will rally with Tiger and all the raw emotion, talent and gamesmanship that he contains. I think Celtic Manor will be Tiger’s playground and he should have a lot of fun.

Anthony Kim

Long shot, I know, but just a bit more time should heal him up. I don’t even think he should play in the BMW Championship so that he can get healthy. I can’t think of a better combination than Kim/Mahan to go against a Molinari or McDowell/McIlroy. I just think he needs to be there and it will hurt him if he’s not there. Sure, since injury, he’s been terrible, but all he needs is time. The game is there.

JB Holmes

JB put up a nice T11 at the DB Championship and is having a better year than when he was on the team in 2008. He has 12 Top 25′s this year including The Open and the PGA. I don’t think of him as a long hitter anymore, but having Holmes, DJ and Bubba would be kind of scary. He’s worth a chance after not playing much in the ’08 Cup, but didn’t lose when he had the opportunity to participate.

Stewart Cink

Cink has Top 20′s in his last 4 events, which were all huge fields (WGC, PGA and 2 Playoff events) and I think he’s a lock for this team, right after Woods. Cink has been playing his way onto this team by making 10 straight cuts ( 7 Top 25′s) after MC’s at the Masters and Players. He brings experience and a camaraderie that this team needs with new faces and young guns.

ALAN NUMSUWAN

Firstly, I don’t think today’s Deutsche Bank wrap-up should be considered as a Ryder Cup qualifier. Let’s all remember that this is a 2-year selection process and while I agree that it’s great to be playing hot going into the Ryder Cup, its consistency, intangibles, and proof that I think will be deciding factors. Here’s my four:

Zach Johnson

Overall, I really like Zach as one of my captain picks. He finished 2009 ranked 6th in the FedEx Cup standings with two wins, and a second and a third place finish, along with nine Top 10s. This year he won at the Crowne Plaza at Colonial and finished 3rd at The PGA Championship and I think he’d be a good teammate with Phil, Bubba, or Kuchar. Zach also hasn’t played a Ryder Cup since 2006 when the U.S. got trampled, so I’m sure a shot at redemption will give Zach some extra drive to succeed.

Tiger Woods

All drama aside, TW is probably still the most skilled golfer and I think he is still one of the most intensely competitive people out there. If he can succeed at The Ryder Cup it could be a resurgence for the TW era in golf. Plus, Tiger will be able to team up with Steve Stricker again, and I also think he’d match up well with Jim Furyk and Dustin Johnson. If his mind is right, he’s deadly at singles.

Stewart Cink

This one comes down to experience. This would be Cink’s fifth Ryder Cup appearance and I know he hasn’t had a stellar 2010 (only 3 Top 10s), but he does have last year’s President’s Cup victory, along with his British Open major. I also like Cink with Zach Johnson, Jim Furyk, and a mentor to Jeff Overton. I’m also encouraged with adding Cink to the team after reading a quote of his from Golf Digest where he said when you’re in a position to win, you have to step on the competition’s throats. I like that attitude representing the U.S.

Rickie Fowler

I know, it will be tough to bring on a fifth Ryder Cup rookie, but I’ve seen Rickie in action this year and he really can put it together. I am most impressed by his Walker Cup domination where went 7-1 over two stints. I also like the tandem of Bubba Watson and Fowler, but can see him succeeding with fellow OSU Cowboy Hunter Mahan, as well as fellow Californian Phil Mickelson.

BOB DIERCKSMEIER

The new Ryder Cup selection process puts more weight on performance in the Ryder Cup year (especially in the majors), gives the U.S captain four picks instead of the two allowed prior to 2008, and allows the U.S. Captain a few extra weeks after the PGA Championship to announce his picks. If you want to read a great book about the new selection process and 2008 Ryder Cup Captain Paul Azinger’s winning strategy and implementation of his pod system, read Azinger’s book “Cracking the Code”. That being said, Captain Pavin still has a tough choice ahead of him. I’m taking a risk here, but I’m going all Nike Golf in my picks — here’s who I think he should choose and why:

Tiger Woods
For Tiger’s star power, audience appeal and for the TV ratings alone, Pavin can’t leave him off the team. However, looking at his recent performance and Ryder Cup record doesn’t give any particular on-paper reasons to choose him. But if you take into consideration his match play experience, the Tiger intimidation factor, his presence in the locker room, plus recent swing changes which have shown flashes of the old Tiger brilliance of late (and three weeks to further dial in those changes), Tiger is a force that needs to be part of the 2010 U.S. Team.

Stewart Cink
I agree with Damian and Alan on this pick — Stewart’s steady play in the last month combined with his Ryder Cup experience make him an almost certain pick for the 2010 U.S. Team. His calm demeanor and major championship success is a perfect balance for younger, less experienced players on the team including Ryder Cup rookies Bubba Watson, Dustin Johnson, Jeff Overton and Matt Kuchar.

Anthony Kim
Although Anthony’s Kim’s recovery from recent thumb surgery has shown slow but steady progress, he’s still No. 9 on the Ryder Cup points list and with three more weeks to get his game in shape Anthony needs serious consideration for the U.S. Team. Rickie Fowler’s name has come up as a potential captain’s pick, but for the choice of a young gun for the 2010 U.S. Team, one only needs to look to Kim’s dominating performance in the 2008 matches, especially his 5&4 Sunday singles trouncing of Sergio Garcia in the opening match. For competitive fire, determination, guts and pure confidence, Anthony Kim is the choice.

Lucas Glover
Lucas is still 10th in Ryder Cup points, and although his recent performance has been lacking, I still feel he deserves a look for the 2010 U.S. Team. Even though today he played himself out of the field for the BMW Championship and the rest of the playoffs (as did Team Europe’s Padraig Harrington), this gives him the opportunity to get his game and mind in shape for match play and the unparalleled pressure the Ryder Cup is known for. The 2009 U.S. Open Champion had a good showing at The Wyndham Championship, and his experience, inner competitive fire and calm outward demeanor could be just the right balance for the Team U.S. locker room.

We only have to wait a few hours to see how accurate the three of us are, and who is most on target with their picks. Stay tuned for more in our series of NG Nation Staff Picks: A FedEx Cup “Halftime” Edition and Ryder Cup Edition are soon to follow.

Also, I’d lke to show love to TW, T12 last week, T11 this week…he’ll get a Top 10 next week…Day and Woods are “trendy”.

Let’s hit the stat pack!

Number of Entries: 11 (no Drew this week)

Number of Golfers Selected: 21

Most Popular Pick: Steve Stricker– picked 7 times

Number of Missed Cuts/WD’s: 3 – AK, Rose, Harrington

Number of Top 10’s: 3 – Luke Donald (T2), Adam Scott (T5) and Stricker (9)

Number of Top 10-Top 25’s: 5 – Tiger + Vijay (T11), Cink (T18), Casey and Phil (T25)

Top Nike Golfer: Tiger (T11)

People That Selected the Winner: 0 - no love for The Hoff

Average Points: 19.09

My big news this week is that Brian and Jane have really stepped it up during the playoffs. They sit 1-2 behind the monthly leader Chris Wang. Brian also pulled off a ballsy Vijay Singh pick and then backed it up as the only person to take Luke Donald. Gotta show respect. However, the winner this week is… Meredith Wang, who recaptures the overall season lead with her 5th win of the season.

Mere’s Winning Team (32 points) : Adam Scott, Steve Stricker, Paul Casey and Dustin Johnson

Mere doesn’t have the season lead, as Brian and Jane push to catch Chris Wang with only 2 events remaining! Below are your monthly and overall standings. (click here to see your points from last week)

Nike Golf notched its tenth worldwide win in the 2010 season today as athlete Kevin Kisner erased a 3-shot deficit in the final round of the Nationwide Tour’s inaugural Mylan Classic to take home the title. Kisner, who is in his first full year on the Nationwide Tour, finished one better than second place finisher Geoffrey Sisk, who held the 18-, 36- and 54-hole leads. Steady play highlighted Kisner’s round on Sunday, which featured four birdies and no bogeys, and 15 of 18 greens hit in regulation. Kisner followed up three straight 68’s with a 67 on Sunday, which proved to be just good enough to take home the trophy after Sisk and challenger Steve Wheatcroft faltered on the closing holes.

Kisner joins fellow Nike athletes Jamie Lovemark and Jhonattan Vegas as winners on the Nationwide Tour in 2010, and the victory takes Kisner from 50th to 14th on the Nationwide Tour money list. Fellow athlete Chris Nallen finished T3 today with an impressive final round 66, taking him from 20th to 16th on the money list. All four athletes are now well inside the Top 25 on the Nationwide Tour money list — Lovemark is 2nd, Vegas 7th, Kisner 14th and Nallen 16th — and all look to be in good position to earn their 2011 PGA Tour cards.

Congratulations again to Kevin Kisner on a well-played final round and a well-deserved victory today!
