Fantasy Four Recap: The Open Championship

Big ups to Oosty, once again. But honestly, I’m a little upset. Only one person picked Lee Westwood. Westwood is “Mr. Major” and more people picked him for the US Open, than for the British Open. It blows my mind. While Tiger, Poulter, Els and Harrington didn’t come through for us, names like Sergio, Stenson, McIlroy, Donald and Kaymer did.

I think I’d still like some more variation in the picks, the most bizarre stat of the event was that since I’ve started keeping track, there’s always been 19 different golfers selected among the 12 regular entries we’ve gotten. Bryan D and Courtney Z seem to mix it up the most, but here’s the Fantasy Four Stat Pack;

  • Number of Entries: 12
  • Number of Golfers Selected: 19 – four events in a row
  • Most Popular Pick: Tiger Woods — picked 11 times
  • Number of Missed Cuts/WD’s: 6  – Wood, Harrington, Rose, Els, Bjorn, Duval
  • Number of Top 10’s: 4  – Lee Westwood (2),Rory McIlroy (T3), Retief Goosen (6), Martin Kaymer (T7)
  • Number of Top 10-Top 25’s: 4 — Luke Donald (T11), Sergio Garcia (T14), Graeme McDowell (T23), Tiger Woods (T23)
  • Top Nike Golfer: Paul Casey (T3)
  • People That Selected the Winner: 0

We had a tie for first this week with 18 points each (2 Top 10′s and 2 Top 25′s).

Brian M’s Winning Team (1st win of the season) : Rory McIlroy (T3), Retief Goosen (6), Sergio Garcia (T14) and Tiger Woods (T23)
Meredith W’s Winning Team (3rd win of the season) : Lee Westwood (2), Rory McIlroy (T3), Luke Donald (T11) and Tiger Woods (T23)

With big finishes in both events this week, Meredith takes over first in the monthly standings, while taking second place to her husband in the season standings. It took 12 events, but NG Nation’s Power Couple has finally emerged as 1+2 in the standings.

There are still 2 events left in this month before the Month 3 winner is announced. This week we go north of the border with the best field the RBC Canadian Open has seen in years. The likes of Casey, Goosen, Donald and more look to get a win this week after heartbreak at St. Andrews. Sadly, I will not be able to attend again this year, but I do hope AK makes his return, as RBC is one of his sponsors. I will also try and have an NG Nation Canada-centric post up this week.

Fantasy Four Recap: Reno-Tahoe Open

Well, I honestly didn’t pay much attention to this event, but I’ll hit a few points. The final group of DeLaet and McCarron totally blew it on Sunday, leaving it wide open for Bettencourt to win. Picks were good, as there were only 4 MC’s, but far from great.

  • Number of Entries: 12
  • Number of Golfers Selected: 19 – third straight week
  • Most Popular Pick: Vaughn Taylor (T35) — picked 9 times
  • Number of Missed Cuts/WD’s: 4 – Joe Ogilvie, Scott Piercy, Daniel Chopra, Ryan Palmer
  • Number of Top 10’s: 4  – John Merrick (T3), Kevin Stadler (T5), Alex Cejka (T5), Chris DiMarco (T10)
  • Number of Top 10-Top 25’s: 3 — Chad Campbell (T15), Stuart Appleby(T18), Steve Elkington (T21)
  • Top Nike Golfer: Matt Hill (T50)
  • People That Selected the Winner: 0

I won this week, with Meredith finishing second because she doesn’t entirely trust me :) However, big Kudos to Bryan D for his picks (T10, T21, T26, T26) which were pretty good.

NG Nation’s Winning Team: John Merrick (T3), Kevin Stadler (T5), Alex Cejka (T5) and Vaughn Taylor (T35)

The link for that is after the monthly and season standings below! Meredith and I are tied for the month lead, but Lendell still holds onto the overall lead.

I bet you can’t wait to see the standings when The Open results are live.

Fantasy Four: John Deere Classic Recap

We were all in love with a Stricker this week and it was a fun and exciting week before the grueling test of The Open Championship coming up this week. Steve Stricker was lights out this week, much to the delight of the fantasy golf world. Other than that, some big names missed the cut and some golfers came through with mediocre performances. Let’s look at the stats;

  • Number of Entries: 12
  • Number of Golfers Selected: 19 – same as last week
  • Most Popular Pick: Pettersson — picked 9 times | Stricker – picked 8 times
  • Number of Missed Cuts/WD’s: 7  – Leishman, Duval, Pettersson, Jacobsen, Bubba, Fowler, Choi, Appleby
  • Number of Top 10’s: 3  – Steve Stricker (1),Vaughn Taylor (6), Tim Clark (T7)
  • Number of Top 10-Top 25’s: 6 — Katy Perry (T15), Charlie Wi (T15), Jason Day (T15), JByrd (T21), ZJ (T21), Boo (T21)
  • Top Nike Golfer: both missed cut
  • People That Selected the Winner: 8  – NG Nation, Mosher, Lendell, Drew, Chris + Meredith W, Alan N and Courtney

We had three winning teams this week, each with Stricker, a Top 10 and another Top 25 for a total of 26 points each.

Drew’s Winning Team:  Steve Stricker (1), Vaughn Taylor (6),  Katy Perry (T15) and David Duval (MC)
Lendell’s Winning Team:  Steve Stricker (1), Tim Clark (T7),  Zach Johnson (T21) and Pettersson (MC)
Mosher’s Winning Team:  Steve Stricker (1), Vaughn Taylor (6),  Zach Johnson (T21) and Pettersson (MC)

This week was a winner’s week and Bryan’s hot streak comes to an end as the only person not to collect any points. Lots of movement in the standings as Drew takes over first place for the month and Lendell takes the season lead. Check below for the Month 3 and Season rankings.

This week is Open week! However, here at NG Nation, we’re also showing love for the Reno-Tahoe tournament, so there will be 2 Fantasy Four events in one week! There will also be special Open posts here on NG Nation, so stay tuned.

Fantasy Four: AT&T National Recap

Another week gone by and we’re still talking about Justin Rose. Good win for him, as he is playing great golf and is on fire. However, only one person picked Mr. Rose, and with back-to-back wins, Bryan D is tied for first in the overall season.

I’m going to take a more methodical approach to these recap posts, so hopefully you like the new format, as it will show everyone’s overall performance for the fantasy contest.

Number of Entries: 11
Number of Golfers Selected: 19
Most Popular Pick: Tiger Woods — picked 11 times
Number of Missed Cuts/WD’s: 6  – Hunter Mahan, Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler, Matt Hill, Alex Cejka, Kevin Sutherland
Number of Top 10′s: 3  – Justin Rose (1), Ryan Moore (2), J.B. Holmes (5)
Number of Top 10-Top 25′s: 4 — Sean O’Hair (T11), Bo Van Pelt (T11), Ricky Barnes (T16), Lucas Glover (T25)
Top Nike Golfer: Carl Pettersson  – picked 0 times
People That Selected the Winner: 1  – Bryan D

Bryan D’s Winning Team:  Justin Rose (1), Brendan de Jonge (T33),  Robert Allenby (T41) and Tiger Woods (T46)

Hit the link to check out the AT&T National Fantasy Points to see how you fared this week, but you can see them below in the monthly standings.

All in all, not a great week for picks, as Rose, Moore and Holmes were only picked once. Low scoring week and Bryan took advantage. July is a big month, as there are 5 more events for this leg of the contest!  Check below for the Month 3 and Season rankings.

Next week we have the John Deere Classic. While the purse is one of the smallest on Tour, there’s a lot of players looking to get their game sharp before The Open.

Stay tuned,

Fantasy Four Recap: The Travelers Championship (Month 2 Results!)

Another exciting week on Tour, as Justin Rose couldn’t hold on and Bubba Watson captured the win. I was actually happy with my selection of players. Curtis, Verplank, Rose and Ricky Barnes are performed well. We also had some big names, such as Goosen and Harrington in the Top 10, so this was a very good tournament.

The big dissappointment lies in Mahan, Perry and Cink. While Mahan got a Missed Cut for just about everyone, Perry picked up a 74th place finish and Cink has a T47 after a string of good starts and a history at this event. Through all of the picks, we ended up with a tie for 1st for our last week of Month 2. Only 2 people picked Bubba Watson and they are your winners this week.

Meredith W’s Winning Team: Bubba Watson (1), Rickie Fowler (T13), Stewart Cink (T47) and Adam Scott (MC)
Alan N’s Winning Team : Bubba Watson (1), Rickie Fowler (T13), Stewart Cink (T47) and Hunter Mahan (MC)

Both teams had 19 points, but there were also a bunch of teams that had a pair of Top 10′s. Hit the link to check out the Travelers Championship Fantasy Points to see how you fared this week. I’d also like to welcome Steve H to the contest.

This concludes Month 2 and in typical PGA Tour winning fashion, Chris Wang pulls off a win on Sunday, during the fourth and final round of this month. Chris finished 2nd at Memorial, 3rd at St. Jude, 9th at The US Open and 3rd at the Travelers for his win. He barely pulls off a win over Alan N (who had a missed cut at Memorial, which clearly hurt him). Congratulations to Chris! However, Alan still holds a slight edge on the season rankings.

Check below for the Month 2 and Overall Season results;

While this only concludes the 2nd Month of the NG Nation Fantasy Four Contest, there are still all the following tournaments to be played (with double points for the FedEx Cup! So there’s still a big chance to win the grand prize!);

JULY
AT&T National
John Deere Classic
Reno Tahoe Open
Open Championship
RBC Canadian Open
The Greenbriar Classic

AUGUST
Turning Stone Resort Classic
WGC Bridgestone Invitational
PGA Championship
Wyndham Championship

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER — FEDEX CUP (DOUBLE POINTS)
The Barclays
Deutsche Bank Championship
BMW Championship
Tour Championship

So stay tuned as we kick off Month 3 of the NG Nation Fantasy Four contest! Thanks again for playing!

Fantasy Four Recap: 2010 US Open

One thing is funny to me looking back at everyone’s picks; of the 12 people I mentioned in my Fantasy post, Graeme McDowell was the only player who wasn’t selected and he was the winner!

Despite that, and let downs from the Englishmen, we had a very close and high scoring week. The big three of Woods, Els and Mickelson all nabbed Top 10′s, along with Dustin Johnson who still managed a Top 10. However, the key to the winner this week was the Top 25′s. The likes of Sergio, Angel Cabrera, Paddy and Furyk all posted Top 25′s. It was a squeaker, but Sergio’s solid 71 on Sunday gave Bryan D the win. Check the original post for the individual rankings (Mick and Lendell were only 2pts away) >> US Open Fantasy Points

Bryan’s Winning Team: Ernie Els (3), Tiger Woods (T4), Phil Mickelson (T4) and Sergio Garcia (T22).

The monthly standings are below, followed by the season rankings. Mick takes the monthly lead, while Lendell takes the overall lead with a low scoring week from the Fantasy Four Power Couple; Chris and Meredith Wang.

Also, this is the second straight week we have a newcomer. Jane starts with a good 14 points, while Mosher has a respectable follow-up to his domination last week.

Next week is the Travelers Championship where the second monthly winner will be determined! It will be a close race. NG Nation will also have a special one-week contest (with prizes!) for the event.

Stay tuned,

D.

NG Nation Fantasy Four: St. Jude Recap

I think my magic 8-ball is in full swing. I fully believe Westwood will win back-to-back. I said that he might, but I didn’t even pick him, so that’s my bad. However, some of you did and had very good weeks.
Schwartzel disappointed and the Allenby WD hurt also, but my fantasy picks were good ones. Crane, Villegas, Slocum, Gay and Ames all finished near the top while Westy picked up the win.

I’m starting something new for the results. I’m posting individual results as replies to your Fantasy Four submissions on the post. So for your individual weekly results, click here and check the comments >> St. Jude Fantasy Points

This week’s winner was with a first time entry. Mosher squeaked out a win over Courtney with the best fantasy showing in this contest’s six week history.

Mosher’s Winning Team: Westwood (1), Slocum (6), Crane (12) and Schwartzel (MC)

The monthly standings are below, followed by the season standings. Chris Wang takes the lead on both fronts, but the competition is tight. Don’t miss a week or you will miss your chance for hot Nike product.

The US Open will be huge. I will promise you I will pick Westwood and he will win.

It’s a big week on NG Nation. Bob will be in Pebble Beach at ground zero with some great updates and I will be throwing down an action packed US Open preview.

Stay tuned,

NG Nation Fantasy Four: Memorial Recap

Good week overall, I would say. Tiger delivered a Top 25, while other big names (Furyk and Mickelson) picked up Top 10′s. Pick of the week had to be Stewart Cink, with a great 8th place finish.

I did well this week, with a pair of Top 10′s (Kuchar and Cink) and then a Top 25 from Tiger. Matt DeLancey makes his first picks since Week 1 and makes a big splash in the contest. He had Furyk, Cink and Mickelson. Sometimes it pays to go with the big names. Matt also proves that it’s never too late to do your picks (if you’re good).

Matt’s Winning Team: Mickelson (2), Cink (8), Furyk (10) and Woods (19).

Below are the Memorial (Month 2) results, followed by the overall season standings;

Next up it’s the St. Jude Classic, the final warm-up before Pebble Beach. While Tiger, Phil and Mickelson sit this one out, McIlroy, Poulter, Harrington and Westwood look to get primed for Pebble Beach.

Stay tuned,

D

NG Nation Fantasy Four: Crowne Plaza Recap

The first month of the NG Nation Fantasy Four is in the books and we have a come from behind winner!

Congratulations to Lendell D., for his win. Ben Crane’s Top 10 finish sealed the win over Meredith Wang who only posted a Top 25.

My Fantasy Four won this week thanks to a Top 10 from Ben Crane and a Top 25 from Paul Casey.

Phil Mickelson, Tim Clark, Steve Stricker and Ian Poulter were the big letdowns for the week, but Phil and Stricks look to rebound next week.

Below are the weekly and first month standings;

Remember, it’s never too late to join as there are still monthly winners (12 Nike ONE Vapor Speed Balls) and an overall season winner (Nike VR or SQ Machspeed Driver) until the FedEx Cup is awarded. Keep playing and keep your heads high.

Next week is a biggie as we head to the Memorial Tournament. Lendell, NGNation.com will be in touch with you!

Stay tuned,

NG Nation Fantasy Four: Byron Nelson Recap

Another fun week on Tour with a lot of young guns and some low rounds by good players.
Everyone’s picks were decent. There were glimmers of hope by Mahan (+5 in the Final Round hurts) and Sabbatini, but I think it was another hard week to pick. Justin Leonard hurt with a T26, but at least he made the cut. Here’s how my Fantasy Four fared;

Hunter Mahan – T50 (0 pts)
Justin Leonard – T26 (0 pts)
Sean O’Hair – T12 (2 pts)
Scott Verplank – T5 (5 pts + 2 pts)

I’m pretty happy with my week. I thought Slocum and Crane would do well, and they did. Cink was the only Nike Golfer to pick up any points with a T25.

There were 4 DQ’d entries (3 late and 1 didn’t have a Nike golfer), but they wouldn’t have won this week.

This week’s winner is Lendell, who is a close second for the season and has a chance to win the monthly price. The winning team was Verplank, Crane, Mahan and Petterson with a pair of Top 10′s.

Below are the fantasy results from the Byron Nelson Championship and the overall season;

Meredith holds a slim lead. Only one week left for this month’s contest (for a dozen Nike ONE Vapors) and it’s still anyone’s race. A win and a couple top 10′s is a lot of points and the field is stacked next week at the Crowne Plaza Invitational.

Stay tuned,

D.
