Ten years ago Nike Golf revolutionized the golf ball industry with its introduction of the Tour Accuracy, the first solid core golf ball, which sent wound golf ball manufacturers scrambling to find competitive golf ball technologies. When Tiger committed to playing this new ball in 2000, it confirmed the success of the solid core golf ball and indicated that the technology would be the benchmark for golf ball design in the future. Well, it looks like history might be about to repeat itself.

Last week on Twitter I heard a mention of a new prototype golf ball from Nike Golf — the PROTOTYPE RZN ball — presumably released at its equipment and sales meetings last month in Fort Worth. Nike Golf has given some of its reps sleeves of this ball to test out and give their opinions and feedback. In this post yesterday on Golfwrx.com we saw the first information about and pictures of this new ball, the pics are in the gallery below (courtesy of Golfwrx.com).

According to the post, this new ball features a new material — resin (hence the prototype name) injected into the core — the first time in the 10-year history of the solid core ball that a material other than rubber would be used for the core of a solid core production golf ball. The new material reportedly makes the core lighter, which allows more weight to be moved to the perimeter of the ball, increasing MOI, and thus ball speed and directional forgiveness. Supposedly the ball feels lighter, and the cover feels softer, presumably for increased feel around the greens. The claim is also that the ball spins less with the driver and more with the wedges.

The first entry in the post mentions these are the three key features of the new ball:

- Faster ball speed: 3 mph faster on average
- Highest MOI ever for a golf ball: more forgiving and tighter shot dispersion
- Steeper Spin Slope (relationship of driver spin to wedge spin): 150 rpm less driver spin and 300 rpm more wedge spin than the Nike One Tour (an already high spinning ball)

Of course none of this information is official or straight from Nike Golf. The official name for this ball is supposed to be revealed in November, with ball hitting retail shelves in February. As soon as we get any official information on this new ball from Nike Golf we’ll surely bring it to you here on NG Nation. I personally can’t wait to see and test out this new ball. A question I have is will this new ball be offered in addition to the ONE Tour and Tour D models, or in place of one or both? Sounds like we’ll have to wait until November to find out.

As many of you know, this week’s FedEx Cup playoff tournament is at TPC Boston and weather experts have predicted Hurricane Earl to make an appearance.

In the lastest weather report I read up here in the northeast, Hurricane Earl was downgraded to a Category 1 hurricane, which still means that winds could be as high as 74 to 95 miles per hour.

According to PGA Tour on-site meteorologist Stewart Williams, Hurricane Earl will arrive at TPC Boston early this afternoon, when 48 of the 99 golfers in the field will be on the course. It’s estimated to drop 2 to 4 inches of rain on TPC tonight, but hopefully it will be gone by Saturday.

Having said that, the best way to stay dry on the golf course is with a good rain suit and a big umbrella. Here’s a look at some of my favorite recent Nike Golf umbrellas. Hope you enjoy and stay dry!

The golf equipment forums have been buzzing for the last week about what might be coming next from Nike Golf for their 2011 equipment line. Lots of speculation and a variety of spy pics have come out, as well as some preliminary information from last week’s equipment and sales meetings. The majority of the comments in the forums have been extremely positive, and the overriding opinion seems to be that this will be Nike Golf’s strongest equipment offering to date.

In this post last night on Golfwrx.com, a user posted some pictures (supposedly) from Nike Golf’s 2011 equipment catalog. Some of the comments in this post indicate that the 2011 equipment line may include the following (keep in mind this is all still speculation at this point):

DRIVERS

VR Pro STR8-FIT Driver: 10.5 and 11.5 degree lofts have 460cc head; 9.5 degree loft comes in both 440cc and 460cc head, 8.5 degree loft comes in 440cc head; All have Nike Project X shaft

We’ll keep you posted on any new developments, and of course we’ll get you the official info as soon as we get it from Nike Golf!

2011 NIKE GOLF EQUIPMENT CATALOG PICS:

At the end of July my family and I went on vacation to visit my wife’s parents in Northwest Iowa. Lucky for me my father-in-law is a golf addict like I am, so I brought my golf clubs along to play a few rounds with him. Prior to my trip I bought a new travel cover — the Nike Golf Club Carrying Case — so I could review it here on NG Nation. The trip was a good test for it, and I share the results with you here.

FEATURES

Out of the box, the Nike Club Case is a good-looking travel cover, and I give it an A+ for appearance. It’s constructed of heavy-duty black nylon with red piping around the edges, a combination that matches the color scheme of Nike’s VR line. The case has a full-length zipper that goes around the outside top edges of the case, so the entire top flap folds back to allow you to put your golf bag in straight down from the top (rather than fumbling with trying to get your bag into a zipper that goes down the top middle of the case like my previous travel cover).

The interior of the case has plenty of room for a full-size bag (mine is the Nike SQ Tour Stand Bag) and is long enough to accommodate today’s longer driver shafts (mine is 45.5 inches and fit with room to spare). One of the best features of this travel cover is the club protection system at the top, which consists of a ribbed foam padded collar you wrap around your club heads and secure with Velcro. It’s very easy to use and provides ample protection for the club heads and shafts. There’s a holding strap for the golf bag, and plenty of room inside for other things like a shoe bag or other items (I easily fit my daughter’s small junior golf bag in next to mine).

The case has carrying handles at the head, foot and on the top flap of the bag. Two buckled straps allow you to cinch and secure the bag once it is zipped closed. The bottom of the case is molded plastic and has two inline skate wheels for rolling the case, and two small legs for standing it on its end. The underside of the case has two plastic skid rails on the outer edges, and five smaller skid pads to protect the nylon on the top half of the case. The case easily folds in half and stands on its end for convenient storage.

There is a shoe pocket on the top flap that is accessed from the inside. The zipper on the outside expands a gusset to make the pocket deeper, and the inside flap of the pocket is made of mesh to provide ventilation.  This is the only pocket for extra gear, there are no other outside pockets, but I had plenty of room inside the case to store what I needed to.

PERFORMANCE

I was really happy with the way this case performed during my trip. The design of the case ensures that it moves as a solid, single unit top to bottom – previous cases I’ve owned tend to be a bit floppy, specifically bending a bit at the top of the bag or neck area of the clubs. The case was easy to lift in and out of the car, wheel through the airport, unpack when I got to my destination and repack when it was time to head home. The club protection unit did its job, and again it was very easy to wrap around and unwrap from the heads of my clubs.

The one feature some might have an issue with is the pockets, or lack thereof. First of all is the absence of exterior side pockets for extra gear — previous travel covers I’ve owned have had pockets on the outside for clothing and other gear. I did not find this prohibitive as I mentioned there was ample room inside for what I needed to bring, and it also prevented me from over-packing the travel cover, but some may wish there were pockets on the outside. Secondly the shoe pocket can only be accessed from inside — I’m used to being able to get at my shoes from the outside, so this surprised me at first. The upside is that no one can get at your shoes or gear from the outside when you’re not looking, but some may wish that this pocket could have access from both inside and outside the case. I personally didn’t have an issue with either of these pocket issues, but I feel this was worth mentioning. Overall I was very satisfied with how the case performed on both legs of the trip.

DURABILTY

Airport baggage handlers can do a number on a golf bag travel cover as I have learned first hand on a couple of occasions. I had one travel cover rip open on the bottom, and on one the zipper broke, both the first time I used them (and initially I thought both were pretty good quality). Neither of these problems happened with the Nike travel cover. The nylon was plenty heavy enough to prevent any holes, and the zippers are very sturdy, so no problems there either. The cinching straps held tight, all buckles remained intact and all handles held up just fine. The molded bottom, skate wheels, molded legs, skid rails and skid pads all survived perfectly intact, and after the trip the case was in very good (almost like new) shape. Either the baggage handlers treated this fine looking case with care, or it held up greatly to their abuse — I’d put my money on the latter.

SUMMARY

The bottom line is I would highly recommend the Nike Golf Club Carrying Case. It’s a handsome case that has plenty of room for my clubs, shoes and extra golf gear. It was easier to handle during my trip than previous travel covers I’ve owned, and it survived the wrath of the airport baggage crews looking as good as when I unpacked it from the box. If you’re in the market for a new case to transport your clubs on your next golf trip, make sure you take a close look at the Nike Golf Club Carrying Case.

If you’re a fan of the Nike METHOD putter like I am, you’re probably aware of the technical innovations that make this one of the most progressive designs in the premium putter category today. The polymetal groove technology in the METHOD reduces skid and gets the ball rolling off the putter face more quickly and consistently than conventional putters, as proved by many tests at the putting lab at Nike Golf’s The Oven. All I know is the ball hugs the green and tracks to the hole, making distance control easier with this putter than with any other putter I’ve ever used. I came across a post about the original patent applications for what is now called  the METHOD putter on Golf-Patents.com. The post was authored during this year’s Open Championship, when Tiger’s switch to the METHOD putter put it directly in the media spotlight for the first three days of the tournament. It has details about two of the utility patents for the METHOD, as well as a design patent for the arrangement and orientation of the face grooves. Knowing what I now know about the METHOD, as well as gaming it in my bag this year, it was cool to hear about the technical origins of this groundbreaking putter design. If you’re a golf equipment junkie, a putter addict or a fan of the METHOD (I happen to be all three), check out the original post — you may (as I did) find this to be an interesting read.

One of our readers sent me a great idea for a putter headcover: Matt Kusek is a Nike Golf demo tech in the Chicago area, and he uses a Nike infant shoe as his putter headcover.

From Matt:

“Go out and buy any Nike infants’ shoes, I use a size 5.5 and you will notice it fits on most putters perfectly. I use a Nike Jordan 1 (it matches my black red nike bag).”

If you’re a golf equipment junkie like I am (in my case, a Nike Golf equipment junkie), you’re always on the lookout for what new equipment ideas are coming down the pike. Last week I discovered an interesting web site that focuses exclusively on golf equipment patent applications. Golf-Patents.com is a blog by patent attorney and golf enthusiast David Dawsey (a.k.a. The I.P. Golf Guy) — David posts about intellectual property issues and patent applications in the golf equipment industry.

The site has several articles about Nike Golf equipment patent applications, and in the coming weeks I’ll be linking to some of these, as they may be an indication of what might be coming soon from Tom Stites and Nike Golf’s R&D facility The Oven. This first article (from last year) is especially interesting, as it outlines patent applications for iron and wood designs with moveable and adjustable weighting features. It looks like Nike has been experimenting with allowing a player to reposition a weighting element in the club head, which would change the shape of the head, the center of gravity and the MOI — an intriguing concept indeed.

Keep your eye out for future posts that show other new concepts for Nike Golf’s club designs. I wonder if we’ll see any of these new designs actually translated to clubs for the retail consumer in the next year or two, and if so how close the final designs are to the original patent applications.

Nike has been in the golf ball business for 10 years now, after first introducing the solid core golf ball (the Tour Accuracy) in 2000. Since then golf ball technologies have seen tremendous advancement, and Nike Golf’s Rock Ishii has been largely responsible for the progression of Nike’s golf ball designs over the last 10 years (check out this video where Rock discusses the Vapor Speed ball). Nike’s latest top level golf ball offering includes the Nike ONE Tour and Tour D models, developed mainly for advanced players. And now the average golfer can benefit from the technology that’s incorporated into the Tour and Tour D.

Nike developed its new Nike ONE Vapor Speed golf ball with the average golfer in mind — it incorporates the same technology used in the Tour and Tour D but optimized for swing speeds of 80 to 90 mph. Nike Golf graciously gave several dozen Nike ONE Vapor Speed balls to NG Nation to be used as prizes for our Fantasy Four contest, and they included an extra dozen for me to test and review. I’ve used the Vapor Speed in several rounds so far, and I share the results of my findings here.

FEEL — PUTTER
Distance is important but to me feel on the greens is more important. I started by rolling the Vapor Speed on the putting green and I was immediately pleased with the soft feel and roll. It has the soft feel of a tour level ball (like the Tour or Tour D) that gave me the confidence to make a run at the hole on both long and short putts.

FEEL — WEDGES

Next in importance is the feel around the greens and from greenside bunkers, and again the Vapor Sped did not disappoint. Using wedges from 100 yards and in I was able to spin the Vapor Speed effectively, and the soft feel gave me the confidence that I could chip the ball close to the hole from around the green.

FEEL — IRONS & HYBRIDS

The Vapor Speed felt crisp using both irons and hybrids. I felt confident in shaping the ball when I needed to, and that it would land softly and stop where I wanted it to. The ball has good feel off the fairway and I’m able to spin it when I have to.

FEEL — FAIRWAY WOODS & DRIVER

The Vapor Speed feels great using fairway woods and the driver too. Golf is a game of confidence, and I have that with the Vapor Speed when hitting long shots off the fairway or nailing the driver off the tee.

DISTANCE

The Vapor Speed has a softer core that’s made for swing speeds of 80-90 mph. I swing around 90 mph and I got great distance from the Vapor Speed, similar to Nike’s Crush ball, with the bonus of enhanced feel on and around the greens.

ACCURACY

I was able to control the Vapor Speed well off the tee with the driver and off the fairway with fairway woods, hybrids, and long and short irons. I felt confident I could make the ball go where I needed it to.

BALL FLIGHT

For me, the Vapor Speed has a medium to high ball flight, which helps me with accuracy off the tee, as well as allowing me to hit the ball high on approach shots and stop the ball effectively on the greens.

SPIN

I would say the Vapor Speed is a medium to medium-high spin ball. It maintains a penetrating ball flight with the driver (without excessive sidespin) but I am also able to spin it with my short irons and wedges.

SUMMARY

Overall the Nike ONE Vapor Speed is a great ball design. It has the feel of Nike’s premium line of balls, but optimized for the slower swing speeds of average players. The lower price point ($40 MSRP) makes it more affordable for the average player also. If you’re looking for a ball that has the performance of a premium ball but is made for the average player — with a more affordable price tag to boot — give the Vapor Speed a try.

If you haven’t noticed yet, Carl Pettersson was sporting a slightly different visor than the one sold in stores at the RBC Canadian Open last week. Pettersson’s version had a higher crown than the Tour Visor offered in retail. Unfortunately for those interested in getting one, just like the Tour-only apparel with the swooshes that adorm the left chest, the offical word from Nike is that it won’t be made for the public.

In lieu of this news, I’m inspired to write about some of my favorite Nike Golf items that you won’t find in stores. If you are interested in obtaining any of the following items, I wish you good luck – they are hard to find and will be priced accordingly.

Nike Putter Headcover

Sure your Nike putter comes with its own headcover, but some of the Athletes have been using a special tour only headcover for their putters. Among those spotted have been Tiger Woods, Anthony Kim, and Trevor Immelman. The putter headcover I’m referring to is an all-black, leather AM&E headcover with a single white/silver swoosh along the top. They are extremely limited in quantity and are one of the more difficult items to find.

Nike SQ DYMO 380

Another one just for the Athletes, the tour version of the Dymo was 380cc vs. the 460cc retail version. This allowed players like Tiger, AK, and David Duval the ability to shape the ball off the tee. The 380 version also had no top alignment aid and did not come in STR8-Fit. Equipment fanatics were all over the 380, hoping that Nike would release a retail version, at least in limited edition but it never happened. They definitely exist out there, but they are still hard to find.

Nike Method Prototype Putter

Now this may be the hardest to obtain. Method Protos were only made for Athletes in 2009 for tour use . These putters are different than the retail version due to the expermentation of the insert softness as well as the stamping on the bumpers and on the bottom of the putter. Also, some of the Method Protos like Paul Casey’s pictured below featured a red insert instead of the retail black version. Chances of getting one of these are very low.

Nike Custom Footwear

Here’s where things look promsing for Nike Golf fans. If there is any chance of getting limited items, its in footwear. In 2008, Nike released Tiger’s SP-8 shoes specially made for majors to the public:  Tiger’s Shoes from 2008 Majors. But, Nike is also known to make custom footwear for their athletes that never get released to the public, including Anthony Kim and Justin Leonard’s custom shoes from the last year’s President’s Cup. Or Paul Casey’s green Zoom Elites that were never released in the U.S.

In the 2010 season, we’ve seen a number of new shoes that have yet to hit the shelves – here are two takes on the Tour Premium that may get offered to retail in 2011.

My previous golf sunglasses were showing some serious wear, so I had been in the market for a new pair of golf-specific sunglasses. I was in luck on my trip to Fort Worth when Nike Golf put a pair of their new Victory E Golf Sunglasses in my room to test and review. I’ve been using these for a while now, and I share my thoughts on them here:

INITIAL IMPRESSION

Out of the box these are very cool shades — they come in a large, hard carrying case with a cleaning cloth and an extra set of lenses. I have the Black/Red 060 model, and the first thing I did was swap the reddish-tinted lenses for the gray ones (my preference is for gray), and changing the lenses was easy and intuitive. The Victory sunglasses are very light, but you can tell the construction is solid and carefully considered.

VISUAL DESIGN

The Victory sunglasses are a shield style, with no frame at the bottom. The top frame is a gentle curve from temple to temple, with a nose bridge piece and two temple pieces with the Nike swoosh on each side. The lenses attach at the top inside corner and fit tight to the front of the top frame, which creates a slick look. The earpieces are rubberized and adjustable, and have a spring hinge connecting them to the temple pieces.

CONSTRUCTION & TECHNOLOGY

The frame is made of  a matte finish magnesium, making these sunglasses very light and comfortable. The lens interchange system is easy to use and keeps the lenses tight in place. The lenses are big and cover a large area without distorting (top to bottom and side to side), and they also block out 100% of both UVA and UVB rays. The spring hinges allow the earpieces to flex when necessary, and the rubber coating on the earpieces make them comfortable on the ears. Personally I wish the earpieces were straight behind the ears instead of bent (my own personal preference), but this is a very minor point.

FIT

The Victory Sunglasses fit me right out of the box, but the nose piece and ear pieces are all adjustable, allowing a custom fit. They aren’t tight at the temples, nor do they feel loose at all, the fit is snug but comfortable.

PERFORMANCE

I’ve worn these several times on the course and many times off the course in casual wear. My eyes are sensitive to light, especially in the bright sunlight here in Arizona. The gray lenses are a perfect tint for me, not too dark or too light, just enough to cool the harsh sunlight. On the course the optics are crisp and clear and make it easier to see the ball both in the sky and against the grass. The frameless design allows me to see out the bottom (when I’m over the ball) without any visual interference. The lightness of these sunglasses makes me forget I’m even wearing anything.
