Nike Notes: New Colorways for Air Rate

Hey all, just a quick post before the John Deere. As you might know, Nike releases colorways of their apparel and footwear in stages, so sometimes you’ll walk into a store and see a new version of the Bold Stripe polo or a new colorway of the Zoom Trophy (like this Livestrong version).

Now it seems that two new colorways of the summer-favorite Air Rate has made their debut in stores. You might recall the Black/Volt and Granite/Green models that debuted in 2010, and Khaki/White and Gridiron/Tour Yellow in 2011. Joining these models in the second half of 2011 are Midnight Fog/Red and Light Grey/Blue.

Get these while the Summer is still here. These are probably the most breathable Nike Golf shoe out there. You can read Bob’s review below to get his feedback.

Nike Golf Nation Spring/Summer ’11 Lookbook

After what has seemed like an eternity of rain up here in the Northeast, we have finally been blessed with some perfect golf weather. Just in time (for some of you), here’s what I have put together from the Spring/Summer Nike Golf Men’s Collection apparel line. This lookbook combines what I think are some of the best outfit combinations from this season’s catalog.

This season, I have incorporated a lot of gray and white bottoms, as I think that this season’s collection of tops matches perfectly with either color. What made it great to put together this book is the extensive variety of golf shoes this season. I’ve used the Lunar Control, Air Range WP, Air Anthem, Air Rate, Tour Premium, Zoom Trophy, Zoom Advance, and TW Zoom 2011.

I also tried to show how you can go either dressed more professional or more casual while wearing shorts. For example, matching the Windowpane polo with Tour Pleat shorts and the Tour Premium provides a more Tour ready look, while wearing shorts. On the other hand, matching the red Tech Core Stripe polo, with Flat Front khaki shorts and the Air Range WP, might be something that suits you better on your casual weekend foursome with your friends.

Lastly, selecting my favorite shirt this season was difficult and I’m not ready to crown my winner yet. What do you think?

What will be my favorite shirt of this season? Only time will tell. Which one is your favorite?

VIDEO: 2011 Nike Golf Footwear

Here at Nike Golf Nation we posted sneak previews of the impressive 2011 footwear line over the summer and have eagerly been waiting their release to the public. Now that the shoes are debuting in stores, Bob Weeks, editor of SCOREGolf.com has been able to get a firsthand look at some of the line including the Air Rate, Zoom Bandon, and Lunar Control. In the video he interviews Doug Reed, Global Category Business Director, Nike Golf Apparel and Footwear.

2010 Fall/Holiday Apparel is Released

In our original sneak peek post on the new 2010 Fall/Holiday apparel collection, we covered about a quarter of the new tops. But now, the wait is over and Nike Golf has uploaded all the new apparel for the men’s, women’s, TW, and TW Platinum lines. You can view the new collection on the Nike Golf website.

Given my excitement for this collection based on what I’ve seen on TOUR, and the fact that I have my own golf tournament this sunday, I decided to put a little fake scripting together using the men’s apparel line and new 2011 shoe line. Simple rules I made for this - you can wear shorts on practice days, and being a sneakerhead, I had to have a different shoe for each day. Now I don’t have these items (yet), but here’s what my 6 day script would look like.

And another thought before I get to it, wouldn’t it be cool to integrate an online scripting software into Nike Golf’s website? It would have made this a lot easier! Hope you enjoy, now what would your script look like? Click on each thumbnail to enlarge.

Product Review: Nike Air Rate Golf Shoes

Because I live in Phoenix, every year I am on the lookout for a good pair of warm weather golf shoes. In winter, I wear a standard pair of Nike leather golf shoes, currently the SP-5 and the Air Max Revive, both in all black. But in summer these tend to be too warm, and I look for a pair that is comfortable, light and breathes well. Earlier this year Nike came out with the Air Rate, which looked like a suitable replacement for my current pair of summer golf shoes (the Nike Air Max Edge). So I bought a pair (in the Granite/Green color) and put them to the test to see if the Air Rate would be a quality summer golf shoe.  Here are my findings:

INITIAL IMPRESSSION

The first thing I noticed out of the box is how light they are. I mean really light. When you try them on it’s remarkable how comfortable and feather-light they feel on your feet. They are also very cool looking — different than traditional golf shoes, the interesting appearance takes a bit of getting used to, but the design is not only pleasing to the eye, it is functional too.

VISUAL DESIGN

Traditionalists might balk at the progressive design or perhaps its casual nature, but if you like cutting edge footwear, this is one cool looking golf shoe. It’s interesting how Nike carries its design motifs across product lines — the laser-cut triangle pattern is one seen in other Nike footwear, specifically in the new Nike Free Run (which I also own). The triangle pattern on the insole is also seen in certain Nike Golf shirts. The color choices are interesting also — I chose the Granite/Green option, but the Black/Green option is attractive as well.

TECHNOLOGY

Nike is known for their R&D of the technology that makes it into their shoes (as seen in these three videos), and the Air Rate is no exception. The uppers are made of thin synthetic perforated leather that’s bonded to a nylon mesh underneath, which makes these shoes not only light but very breathable. The sole features a molded spike pattern, with two spikes at the ball of the foot and two at the outer heel. The rest of the sole has molded ridges that provide plenty of traction. The heel features the Nike Air unit that is visible at the back of the heel, and the Nike Power Channel runs in a zig-zag from the toe to the heel.

COMFORT

Because of the thin upper, these shoes are very comfortable not in a thick, padded way (like other Nike Golf shoes), but in their lightness and breathability — I would describe the feel of these shoes as “light and airy”. And the insole and Nike Air unit in the heel provide plenty of cushioning for every step on the course.

FIT

I recommend trying these on before buying to make sure the size is right for you. I noticed that this shoe was a bit narrower and longer than other Nike shoes I own (both running/casual and golf, and this was also the case in my SP-5’s). But once you get the sizing right, I think you’ll find this to be a very comfortable casual summer golf shoe.

PERFORMANCE

These shoes are so light I barely noticed I had them on. I can vouch for the breathability of these shoes — I tried these out for the first time on a 104-degree day and the air really flowed through to keep my feet cool. The molded spike pattern on the sole more than did its job — in the several times I’ve played in these my feet haven’t slipped once.

SUMMARY

Nike Golf has come up with a winner in the Air Rate. This ultra-light and breathable warm weather golf shoe is very comfortable, stylish and performs on the course. If you are in the market for a summer golf shoe, I highly recommend trying the Air Rate.
