NGN Staff Picks: Custom Kicks for the 2012 Masters

It’s almost Masters week which is my favorite week of golf. Last year, I brought to you some custom shoe options for the 2011 Masters, and we shared with you a post about what the Nike Athletes participating in the Masters received in their swag bag. In 2011, Nike went with a green trainer with a yellow Air Max sole.

This year, I’ve discussed the custom shoe possibilities for the Nike Golf swag bag for the 2012 Masters with the NGN Team, and we decided to pick our favorite Nike shoes that can be used as custom kicks for the Athletes.

Nike will debut their custom swag for the Athletes next week, but in the meantime, here are our picks!

NGN Bob: Nike Huarache Free 2012 (Court Green/White/Tour Yellow). Photo Credit: Finishline.com

I have to agree with Bob with his selection because this shoe is nostalgic for me. I had the originals when I was in elementary school and miss them dearly. But with the free sole integration, these are just extra amazing. I have a bunch of friends who copped the Stealth/White/Blue colorway and they’re hot. Colored laces are in. These are definitely a winner – maybe throw some red laces in these to finish the Masters touch (Notice the flag color in the Masters logo).

NGN Damian: Jordan CP3.V West Forsyth PE (Green/Yellow) and Nike Zoom KD IV “Wanda Pratt” (Green/Yellow). Photo credit: Nicekicks.com (an amazing sneaker blog by the way)

Damian blessed us with two picks this year – both top of the line Nike Basketball shoes. The Jordan CP3.V West Forsyth PE edition pays homage to Chris Paul’s playing days at West Forsyth High School, while the Nike Zoom KD IV Wanda Pratt, is a nod to Kevin Durant’s mother. I could definitely see AK playing ball in these in his driveway.

NGN Alan: Nike Free ID 5.0 (Lucky Green/Varsity Maize/White) Photo Credit: Nikeid.Nike.com

The Free sole is my favorite sole in Nike history, so naturally I leaned towards a shoe with this technology. I designed this shoe with a green base and eyelets, with yellow accents in the collar, heel, swoosh and midsole. I choose very minor red accents around the swoosh and on the laces. I was hoping to put “AUGUSTA” on the tongue, but its not allowed for public consumption.

What shoe do you like best?

UPDATED: Limited Edition Nike Golf Equipment for the 2012 Masters

Update 3/27: Nike has announced the following via their website regarding the Limited Edition Collection for the 2012 Masters:

The first golf Major of the season is just around the corner, and Nike Golf is celebrating by introducing a new Limited Edition Collection. Inspired by golf’s most hallowed tradition, the three products in the collection commemorate some of golf’s most memorable moments while helping to elevate your game.

Nike Lunar Control (Limited Edition) Men’s Golf Shoe
Nike designers obsessed over every detail to transform this shoe into something truly special with tasteful broguing, premium leather and a green and yellow color scheme that strikes the right chord. Lunarlon cushioning in the heel is ultra-lightweight for excellent comfort and the Nike Power Platform outsole offers the stability and balance the game requires. An accompanying linen shoe bag represents the caddie uniform for a perfect complement to this unique version of a groundbreaking shoe.

Nike Method Concept C1 RH (Limited Edition) Golf Putter
This revolutionary putter blends art and science to give you a smoother stroke and truer roll with less skid for a more precise stroke. How did Nike do it? Engineers created just the right balance of a lightweight aluminum face and heavier stainless steel body resulting in a high MOI-to-head ratio putter. It has the stability of the largest mallets of the game with a small blade-like form and premium, crafted style.

Nike 20XI – X (Green Swoosh Limited Edition) Golf Balls
Rounding out this collection is the ball that helps generate longer distance off the tee and more controlled shots on the green. With a lighter resin core and heavier outer layers never before seen in the industry, internal tests have shown, on average, a two to three mph increase in ball speed. A one mph increase equates to two to three yards carry distance. And that’s an advantage you don’t have to be playing in a Major to appreciate.

**************

This is just a sneak peek, but GolfWRX.com has posted an image of the new Limited Edition Lunar Control for the 2012 Masters. I personally cannot wait for this shoe. Looks like the green and yellow method concept was also part of this limited edition collection, along with 20XI balls with the green paint.

Have a look.

Winning Apparel: Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods has been back, at least in my opinion, but he finally put it all together on the PGA Tour. He won the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard wearing the new Tiger Woods Collection which has some of the lightest weight garments ever in the Nike Golf apparel history.

Have a look at TW’s apparel, then check out the gallery for up close pics. You can get the same apparel that TW wore at Golf Coast Pickers here:

Thursday:  TW Ultra Light Polo (Black)

Friday: TW Ultra Light Stripe (sometimes referenced as Hyperlite Stripe) (white)

Saturday: TW Gradient Stripe Polo (Black)

Sunday: TW Heather Stripe Polo (Action Red)

Nike Apparel in Stores

Hey all, I stepped into New York Golf Center today to check out some goods and the first thing in the store is the new Tiger Woods collection which immediately caught my eye. I haven’t seen the TW apparel since that meeting in New York with Nike, so it was great to see it up close again. Pretty much everything Tiger is wearing on Tour can now be bought in stores, and its the exact shirt from the TW insignia to the swoosh on the chest.

I also love the new sport collection, which Paul Casey wore during last week’s tournament. The shorts and pants are also a big hit, especially the new blue and red colorways of the modern tech slim fit pants.

For shoes, the new Zoom TW is really a great shoe that doesn’t get much coverage since he’s wearing the Free-Inspired Prototype. The Dunks are simply awesome. I took a close up for you all.

One thing that I didn’t capture, which I now regret, are the matching TW pants. These pants are made of a breathable Dri-Fit fabric and the fit is great unlike some of the roomier earlier editions. Also, the swoosh on these pants is the same one on the TW shirts and is featured on the left thigh, as opposed to the back right pocket like other pants.

Have a look and I suggest you check out the goods at your local store.

Nike Golf Gear Up Event at Nike Store Scottsdale

This morning I played 18 holes at my favorite track Papago Golf Course, and afterwards I headed north to the Nike Store at Scottsdale Quarter for the Nike Golf Gear Up Event which ran from noon to 6 p.m. Nike Golf was out in full force for this special event, and they had their 2012 equipment, footwear and apparel lines on display both inside the store and outside in the courtyard just to the north of the building.

There was a great vibe to the event, as there were DJs spinning tunes inside on the second floor where the Nike Golf collection is, and also out in the courtyard. Inside I met up with Phoenix Nike Golf rep Gordie Sullens, and after checking out the footwear and apparel on display, snapping a few pics and talking with some of the Nike staff there, I headed out to the courtyard. Nike Golf had several tents set up outside, with their equipment, footwear and golf ball lines on display. They also had a large portable hitting bay set up, where they were conducting Speed Trials of the new VR_S family of equipment. There were several people trying out the VR_S equipment while I was there, and there was good traffic at the event as a whole, both inside and out.

Nike Golf will be hosting nationwide Speed Trial events like the one in Scottsdale today starting on March 31st, and I highly suggest trying out the VR_S family for yourself. I’m really liking the whole VR_S line — driver, fairway wood, hybrid and irons, and I had them all in the bag at Papago again today. You can check out when and where there will be a Nike Golf Speed Trials event in your area by clicking on the link below.

2012 Spring Men’s Apparel Lookbook

Fingers crossed folks, I am looking to get my first round in since September this week where the forecast has an expected temperature of 68 degrees in NYC (although its 35 today so who knows). Like last year, I have put together my favorite items for the Spring Men’s Collection.

Just to note, Nike releases its seasonal collection periodically throughout the season so some items you see on Tour may not be available yet. As always, this lookbook combines what I think are some of the best outfit combinations from this season’s catalog.

This season, I dedicated a separate page to the revamped Tiger Woods Collection which is, from a technology standpoint, awesome. The line comes pretty much in four colors: Black, Red, Green, and Blue – and I am OK with that because this line is about performance and it certainly does that.

You’ll also see that I incorporated a lot of bold color combinations including red, green, and blue pants into the mix. Colors are really big this season, on and off the course, so it’s no surprise that Nike Golf has led the way on the course.

I also went with all shorts pairings this year. One because the colors are awesome in the new flat front tech line, but also because it gets me thinking about warm weather and playing golf again. I’ve used the TW Free-Inspired Prototype, Dunk, Lunar Control, Tour Premium, Zoom Trophy, Lunar Prevail, Lunar Ascend, and Air Range to pair the outfits with.

Tiger Woods at Honda Classic in Ultra Light Argyle Polo

Tiger dazzled today during Round 4 of the Honda Classic, going low to finish in a tie for second with a round of 62. He wore his trademark black slacks, black Nike Free Prototype TWs, and an Action Red Ultra Light Argyle  polo from the 2012 TW Collection.

I had a chance to check this polo out in September at Nike’s NYC office and it weighs an astonishing 4.7 oz. The hanger had more weight to it! To reach the ultimate weight reduction of this shirt, Nike implemented perforations all over it to allow for breathability, a self-folding collar, and screened on swoosh and TW insignia as opposed to embroidery. They thought of everything!

FIRST LOOK PICS: Nike Lunar Ascend Golf Shoes

For Christmas I received a $100 gift card to tgw.com, so a week ago I pulled the trigger and bought a pair of the new Nike Lunar Ascend golf shoes. I’ve had my eye on these ever since we first got a sneak peek back in August of last year, and I knew the blue/gray/white colorway was the one I would go with. They arrived a few days ago, and my first impression (from trying on indoors) is — WOW, what a shoe. Super-light and extremely comfortable, this looks to be one of Nike Golf’s best designs for a summer golf shoe yet. I am already a big fan of the Air Rate and Air Range, but I can tell already that the Lunar Ascend will give those a run for their money.

The Lunar Ascend is the first Nike Golf shoe to use Nike’s Hyperfuse technology, and it definitely keeps the shoe weight to a minimum. The Lunarlon in the sole (first seen in the Lunar Control) gives the Lunar Ascend a super-smooth ride. The mesh upper also looks to be very breathable to keep cool in the summer heat. And the new integrated traction sole pattern looks to have plenty of stability, although I’ll know more when I game these in a live round.

One initial note on sizing: the pair I have seems to run true to size, if not a little big. Like the Air Rate, it has plenty of length, and the medium width seems to be true also (the Air Rate seemed to run a little narrow). I like my golf shoes to not be too tight — the Lunar Ascend has plenty of room for comfort without being too big.

I can’t wait to take these to the course to see how they perform during live play, and when I do I’ll give a full review. Until then take a look at these first in-hand pics of the Lunar Ascend:

Nike Notes: Kevin Millar in Air Ranges

Red Sox player Kevin Millar tweeted this pic of himself at a golf outing supporting the Children’s Miracle Network. Millar got hooked up with some serious Nike gear as he’s sporting some sweet Air Range WP’s with the neon laces. Check out the bright green shirt too, who else is rocking that look this Spring?
