Jason Day’s Custom Lunar Command PE for The Memorial

June 1, 2017 by Bob Diercksmeier Leave a Comment

Jason Day is not shy when rooting for his adopted hometown team to bring another championship to the state of Ohio. Wearing a Nike Lunar Command PE for the first round of The Memorial, the shoe shows his support for the defending champions.

Living in Ohio, Day has become friends with fellow Nike Athlete J.R. Smith who, in addition to being a tremendous athlete on the court, is also a stick on the golf course. Day also gave Smith, who plays to a single digit handicap, a pair of the Lunar Command PE which he will get some good use wearing after he wraps up his season and gets back on the links.

Nike Air Jordan 13 Golf Shoe available May 18 on Nike+ and May 19 on nike.com

May 9, 2017 by Bob Diercksmeier Leave a Comment

TAKE FLIGHT ON THE FAIRWAY: AIR JORDAN 13 GOLF

Inspired by Michael Jordan’s feline quickness on the court, the Air Jordan 13 Golf shoe honors MJ’s love for the links by reimagining a true court classic for the course.

Drawing direct inspiration from the Air Jordan XIII basketball shoe, the Air Jordan 13 Golf shoe shares many of the same elements. In 1997, Tinker Hatfield fashioned the AJ13 hoop shoe outsole after a cat’s paw, to provide MJ with great articulation and court traction.

The AJ13 Golf shoe applied those same principles, allowing the shoe to move with optimal motion. The paw-like tooling of the articulated outsole provides the perfect blend of balance and flexibility, which allows the athlete to have a stable platform on the various undulations and surfaces faced during a golf round.

The full-length Lunarlon midsole provides soft yet responsive lightweight cushioning while the premium leather upper is designed with medial and lateral overlays that offer a 1-year waterproof guarantee. These overlays also incorporate non-stretch synthetic leathers that assist in upper, mid-foot and heel support.

The Air Jordan 13 Golf shoe is for the golf athlete that appreciates sophisticated styling with an athletic twist. It’s the perfect blend of a classic Air Jordan model that brings style to the sport of golf.

Offered in two colorways: White/University Red and White/Black.

First available May 18 on Nike+ and May 19 on nike.com and at select retail partners. MSRP $200

Nike Golf Air Jordan I Golf Shoe Available February 10, 2017

NIKE GOLF BRINGS AIR JORDAN I RETRO HIGH TO THE LINKS

More than 30 years after the debut of the Air Jordan I, Nike Golf is introducing the iconic silhouette to the course.

“MJ introduced his provocative style of play to professional basketball in 1984, and the Air Jordan I shocked the world at the same time,” says Gentry Humphrey, VP Nike Golf Footwear. “Interestingly, Michael started to take up the game of golf in 1984, the exact same year Nike started to develop the Air Jordan I.”

Entering Jordan’s rookie year, Nike looked for a way to create a shoe that could match his other-worldly talents on the court while also defying the status quo.

“The Air Jordan I was the first sneaker that really pushed the limits on what was acceptable,” recalls Michael Jordan. “It’s like being a young kid, when his parents say he can’t do something but he wants to do it. I felt like I wanted to be different.”

This limited offering features a few notable changes from the original basketball shoe, including extra padding to provide additional comfort and support around the ankle, Jumpman logo on the tongue, Nike Free-inspired outsole with soft spikes and a fully waterproof upper.

The Air Jordan I golf shoe will be available in two colorways (white/black/varsity red and white/metallic silver) beginning Feb. 10 at nike.com and select retailers for a suggested retail price of $200.

Tiger Woods to Wear TW ’17 at Hero World Challenge

November 28, 2016 by Bob Diercksmeier 1 Comment

When Tiger Woods returns to action this week — his first tournament play since Fall 2015 — he’ll come equipped with a prototype of his latest signature golf shoe, the Nike TW ’17.

“This shoe is an absolutely integral part of my return to the sport I love and have missed so much,” Woods says. “Nike really got in the zone with me. I knew Tobie and I were on to something special back when I tried on the first prototype. I feel supreme support from this shoe which leads to the utmost confidence when I step onto the course.”

Since July 2015, Woods and the Nike team, led by Tobie Hatfield, Nike Senior Director of Athlete Innovation, reimagined the 14-time major champion’s signature footwear. The team leveraged the additional time they had with Woods to start at the very beginning and address his needs as his rehab progressed.

Below are some of the key moments that informed the design and creation of the TW ‘17:

JULY 2015: SULPHER SPRINGS, WEST VIRGINIA
Woods and Hatfield meet over dinner during the Greenbrier Classic and agree on positioning for the Nike athlete’s next generation of footwear — they didn’t want to simply update his current shoe. During the discussion, Woods reveals his new swing has shifted his dominance from his left leg to his right.

OCTOBER 2015: JUPITER, FLORIDA
Hatfield delivers four options of an initial prototype shoe to Woods at his home in Florida. The prototypes all address the need of keeping his feet more secure and locked down in his shoe. Woods selects one of the concepts to move forward with.

FEBRUARY 2016: JUPITER, FLORIDA
Hatfield and Carl Madore, Innovation Design Lead for Nike Golf footwear, share four varied options of the prototype for Woods to assess. Woods hits on a simulator, and is intrigued by the duo’s strapping system concept — designed to help keep him secure through his swing and a full day of golf.

APRIL 2016: GRANITEVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA
Nike delivers a polished product to Woods, who begins his own wear testing on the course. Since returning from surgery, it’s the only golf shoe Woods has worn.

The Nike TW ’17 will be available in Spring 2017. Stay tuned to @nikegolf for more information.

HOW A SNOWMOBILE AND A TRIP TO THE BAHAMAS HELPED RORY MCILROY GET HIS GROOVE

In mid-August, Rory McIlroy and his performance team escaped to the Bahamas for five days of concentrated practice and training. McIlroy hit the range, the weight room and, of course, the links. The effort paid off: he ended the summer with a brace of wins — the Deutsche Bank Championship and the TOUR Championship — and claimed the 2016 FedExCup.

McIlroy also used the relative seclusion for final testing of Nike Golf’s latest shoe: The Nike Lunar Control Vapor, putting to paces its Articulated Integrated Traction outsole.

After an initial trial on the driving range, McIlroy played nine holes and deliberately hit extra shots from all possible angles — side-hill, down-hill lies, bunkers and more — to push the limit of the shoe.

“For as long as I can remember, I’ve played golf in spiked footwear, and up until two years ago those spikes were metal,” McIlroy recalls. “Through its drive to innovate and bring the sport to new places, Nike has created a new traction system that provides me with a stable base to push off the ground and deliver the distance I need off the tee.”

Inspired by the tread on snowmobiles, the new traction system, which was first introduced in the Nike Flyknit Elite, decouples the medial heel and lateral forefoot area to help propel the athlete through the swing. The articulated channels also allow for better balance while keeping the golfer lower to the ground. A unique TPU tread features a protruding series of tooth-like tracks allowing for more points of contact for maximum traction that continuously engage with the ground as weight shifts from heel to toe.

“From the beginning, our goal was to help athletes perform at the highest level,” said Gentry Humphrey, VP Nike Golf Footwear. “Nike Articulated Integrated Traction’s geometry provides great traction on any surface and disperses stud pressure. Not having to place receptacles on the outsole means more room for extra foam underfoot to provide amazing cushioning.”

That means it is both effective in a bunker and friendly on the green.

In the Nike Lunar Control Vapor, Nike’s new traction system is married to a full-length Lunarlon midsole and Nike Flywire. Combined these elements help keep the foot stable, and cushioned, through the swing. A lightweight premium microfiber upper with a 2-year waterproof guarantee to keep feet dry.

Combined, these elements form a winning formula: One which four-time major winner McIlroy is excited to debut this week at the WGC-HSBC Champions.

The Nike Lunar Control Vapor, available in men’s and women’s sizing, will first be available in the United States in limited colorways via the Nike+ App on November 22. Additional colorways will launch on nike.com on November 25.

NIKE GOLF CLUB COLLECTION: CHARGE THE CUP

The Nike Golf Club Charge the Cup collection celebrates the Ryder Cup, a biennial match play contest between the United States and Europe.

The Charge the Cup collection is designed for off-course style with on-course functionality. Including the Nike Classic 99 hat, Nike Range Sweater and Nike TR Dry Blade polo each piece in the collection celebrates this storied competition. The U.S. team, represented by the stars and stripes, is primed for an eighth win since 1979.

“I’ve been watching the Ryder Cup ever since I was a kid and it’s always been a goal of mine to earn a spot on Team USA,” recalls Brooks Koepka. “I’m excited to finally have the opportunity to represent my country and I will do whatever I can to help our team win the cup.”

For the European team, a bold 10 and a hidden 11 in the graphic toasts the reigning champs and honors their prior victories and Cup retention.

“Playing in the Ryder Cup has been one of the best experiences I’ve had on a golf course. I love being part of a team,” states Rory McIlroy. “I’m excited to come together with my teammates for the chance to win my fourth consecutive Ryder Cup.”

The Nike Golf Club Charge the Cup collection is available now on nike.com and at select retailers.

GOLF TRACTION TAKES A NEW COURSE

As seasoned golfers will attest, a proper golf swing is built from the ground up. A flat, stable front foot and torqueing back foot enhance power, accuracy and consistency.

To align with this asymmetrical process and ultimately facilitate better footwork, Nike designers created Articulated Integrated Traction. Developed via research and athlete testing, the all-new traction decouples the medial heel and lateral forefoot area to help propel the athlete through the swing. “When our team of designers started creating what would become Articulated Integrated Traction we factored in foot performance through every aspect of the swing,” explains Gentry Humphrey, VP Nike Golf Footwear. “We also considered the various surfaces and angles a golfer has to play through each and every round and worked hard to create traction that performs in every condition.”

The articulated channels also allow for better balance while keeping the golfer lower to the ground. A unique TPU tread design offers continuous traction that replaces traditional spikes without sacrificing grip.

Debuting on the new Nike Flyknit Elite, the traction is paired with a full-length Lunarlon midsole for responsive cushioning and a lightweight, breathable one-piece Flyknit upper. The first shoe featuring Flyknit specifically engineered for golf performance, it presents targeted support in key areas to keep the foot locked down and stable. Dynamic Flywire provides midfoot lockdown throughout the motion of the swing while a mid-height collar conforms to the athlete’s foot and helps prevent grass and other debris from entering the shoe. A TPU skin for dew protection was added along the upper’s edge.

The Nike Flyknit Elite will be available in two colorways (pure platinum/cool grey and black/clear jade) June 16 at nike.com and select retailers.

2016 Nike Golf Club “Seek Victory” Collection

June 2, 2016 by Bob Diercksmeier Leave a Comment

Nike Golf Club Collection

The Men’s Nike Golf Club line has some pretty sweet additions for 2016 — the new “Seek Victory” collection features some new tee-shirts, shorts, hats, outerwear and a version of the RZN Tour Black  golf ball customized with a new set of icons, just in time for the U.S. Open at Oakmont, which begins two weeks from today.

From Nike Golf’s official press release:

Oakmont Country Club, among the most challenging courses in the United States, is famous for deep bunkers, tall grass and narrow fairways that demand players adopt a no-risk, no-reward mentality. The latest collection from Nike Golf Club heralds both these gamblers and the course.

Fashioned for golfers who go big even when the permissible margin for error is small, the “Seek Victory” collection debuts bold graphic tees, customized golf balls, expressive headwear and unexpected pops of color.

The new collection is available now on nike.com and at select retailers. I especially like the Lunar Force 1 shoes, the Lockup Tees, the Fit Washed shorts, and both the reversible bucket and True flat brim hats.
